Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was first celebrated on 9th January 2003 to honor the contributions of the Indian diaspora, following the vision of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The date, January 9th, was chosen to honour Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa in 1915. Initially held annually, it transitioned to a biennial format starting in 2015 .
