PM Ujjwala Scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016. Its main goal is to offer clean cooking fuel to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households in India. Initially, the target of the scheme was to provide 8 crore LPG connections by March 2020.
However, the scheme achieved this in 2019 itself and surpassed its target with more than 10 crore connections (an additional 2 crore+ under Ujjwala 2.0) by December 2024 The objective of the PM Ujjwala Scheme is to enhance health and environmental conditions by reducing the use of traditional biomass fuels.What is PM Ujjwala Scheme?
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship scheme launched by the Government of India in 2016 . The scheme aims to improve the health and welfare of women in rural areas by providing them with free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections. The Ujjwala scheme launch date is May 1st, 2016 marking a significant step towards reducing the dependency on traditional cooking fuels. Ujjwala 2.0, an extension of the PM Ujjwala Yojana, involved the allocation of an additional 1.6 crore LPG connections, with a special focus on providing facilities to migrant households. The government introduced Ujjwala Scheme 2.0 in 2021 , further enhancing the benefits of the original scheme. The aim of Ujjwala 2.0 was to provide an additional one crore LPG connections to poor households. The target of distributing these additional connections was successfully achieved by December 2022 . The scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas .

Key Features of PM Ujjwala Scheme
PM Ujjwala Scheme has strengthened the government's commitment to providing clean cooking fuel to marginalized communities. Its key features include:- Targeted Beneficiaries: Initially focused on women from BPL households, the scheme now includes SC/ST communities, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) beneficiaries, and other economically weaker sections.
- Subsidy Amount : The Ujjwala gas subsidy amount is Rs. 1600 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder, covering all connection-related costs. An additional subsidy of Rs. 300 is available for up to 12 refills per year in FY 2024-25.
- First Refill and Stove : In Ujjwala 2.0 , a free first refill and stove are included.
- Subsidy: A targeted Rs. 300 subsidy per 14.2 kg cylinder (or proportionately for a 5 kg cylinder) is available for up to 12 refills per year in FY 2024-25.
- Implementation: Applications are processed through LPG distributors with KYC details.
- Women-Focused : Connections are issued in the names of women to empower them.
PM Ujjwala Scheme Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for the PM Ujjwala Scheme are as follows to qualify for subsidy:- Economic Status : Households must fall under the SC/ST, PMAY (Gramin), Most Backward Classes, AAY, Tea and Ex-Tea Garden tribes, Forest Dwellers, residing in Islands and River Islands, SECC (AHL TIN), or Poor Household (as per 14-point declaration).
- Gender: The scheme is focused on women applicants.
- Age: The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
- No Existing LPG Connection: The household should not have an active LPG connection.
- Documents Required: Aadhaar card, proof of address, and bank account details are mandatory
