Sonali Jha UPSC Success Story

Preparing for UPSC requires students to work through different stages of the examination. For Sonali Jha, the journey involved improving her Mains preparation, practising answer writing, and later preparing for the Interview.

Her experience shows how she worked on her preparation after an earlier attempt and used regular tests, content improvement, mock practice and mentorship as part of her journey. She gradually focused on strengthening different aspects of her preparation and adapting her approach at each stage. Her journey also highlights how consistent practice and focused preparation shaped her path towards securing AIR 89.

Sonali Jha's Journey Started With a Focus on Improving Mains

Sonali had appeared for the examination before. After her previous Mains performance, she focused on improving her score and adding more value to her preparation.

She explained that her earlier score was around 750 and that she wanted to work further on her Mains preparation.

“Mains mein toh pichli baar I had a good, like decent score 750 ke around tha. Mostly because last year mera PT ki wajah se I thought ki list mein nahi aaya toh I thought ki thoda Mains mein hi aur improve karte hain.”

She also described the change she noticed in her preparation:

“To abhi toh marksheet waise aayi nahi hai but I think udhar hi thoda content aur value addition waghaira kara hoga toh usse Mains ka score badha hoga kaafi.”

This phase became the starting point for her focus on better content, value addition and stronger Mains preparation.

Sonali Jha Built Her Mains Preparation Through Daily Practice

As Sonali continued her preparation, regular testing and answer writing became important parts of her routine. Alongside her personal preparation, she used daily tests and evaluations to practise writing answers.

She shared:

“Iske saath ye tha there were daily test. Toh mera jo test aur answer writing ki skills thi wo idhar se kaafi help milti thi.”

She further explained the role of content and practice:

“Daily test and then I used to get evaluation”

These activities helped her work on both answer writing and content. She also mentioned test simulators and personal mentorship as useful parts of this stage.

How She Focused on Content Before Advancing Her Answer Writing

For Sonali, answer writing was closely connected with content preparation. She believed that candidates should first build strong content and then improve their ability to present it effectively.

“Ek toh there is not a fixed rule ki kisi ki strategy saat papers hai toh aap bhi wahi karo but haan ye bare minimum hai ki ek achhe quality ke notes rakho pehle aur usmein value addition rakho.”

Her approach also included regular writing:

“Practice like daily answer writing jo Pre and Mains ka teen mahine ka tha toh I wrote answers everyday aur simulation bhi kiye tests ke.”

She later explained her preferred sequence:

“Mere liye content pehle matter karega. Jab content achhe se by heart ho gaya hai toh phir aage chalo aur answer writing itna mushkil nahi hota.”

This approach placed content building, answer writing and advanced content development within a continuous preparation process.

Sonali Jha Prepared for the Interview With Focused Practice

After the Mains stage, Sonali's preparation moved towards the Interview. She recalled being nervous about the Interview and later adopted a focused preparation approach rather than trying to cover everything.

“Toh maine limited rakha aapka jo wo current affairs aur wo hota hai PDF of like 10 something pages toh udhar se saara current affairs kar liya aur thoda mock practice karti rahi.”

She also highlighted the importance of staying composed:

“Complex karne se waise bhi bekaar hi hota because I didn't have time toh basically current affairs kara aur DEF waghaira thoda prepare karke and then it's more about mind game sir.”

Her Interview preparation therefore centred on selected current affairs, mock practice, some preparation for specific areas and maintaining the right mindset.

How PW Supported Sonali Jha's UPSC Preparation

PW's programmes formed part of Sonali's preparation during different stages. She was part of SMP and IGP, and specifically mentioned daily tests, evaluations, value-added content, test simulators and personal mentorship.

“Content ke liye Prahar ka jo tha usmein kaafi value added examples data committees hain.”

She also said:

“Aur phir finally jaate-jaate also there was like ye poora jo test mein stimulators the. Toh wo diye the. And personal ma'am ek mentor bhi mili thi mujhe.”

These resources supported different parts of her preparation, including answer writing, content development, testing and mentorship. Her experience presents PW's role as part of a broader preparation process rather than a replacement for personal study.

Sonali Jha's AIR 89 Marks a Significant Change in Her Journey

Sonali's preparation evolved through multiple stages, from improving her Mains score to strengthening content and answer writing, and finally preparing for the Interview. Her earlier experience also helped shape the way she approached the next stage of preparation.

She had not expected a rank below 100. In the interview, she shared:

“Nahi bilkul bhi nahi hua sir. Bilkul bhi nahi.”

And when asked about expecting a rank below 100, she said:

“Never never in even the wildest of dreams I can't. Aur 100 se neeche I was thinking around 400 500 aisa hoga.”

Her final achievement of AIR 89 therefore came after a preparation journey marked by continued improvement, testing, practice and focused preparation.

Sonali Jha's story offers a practical lesson for UPSC aspirants: preparation can develop gradually across different stages. Building content, practising answer writing, taking tests, reviewing performance and preparing for the Interview can each have a place in the larger journey.
