In a proportional relationship, one quantity changes at a constant rate compared to another.

In mathematical terms, a proportion can be written as
a : b = c : d
or
a/b = c/d
Here, a and b are in the same ratio as c and d. This helps us compare quantities and find unknown values easily.

Proportions are widely used in daily life. For example, while cooking, if a recipe for 2 people needs 1 cup of rice, then cooking for 4 people will require 2 cups of rice. In geography, proportions help in reading maps using scale. In physics, they explain relationships such as speed, distance, and time.

In other words, it helps us understand how one thing changes when another item changes. This relationship is significant in many fields, including cooking, geography, and physics.

Direct Proportion Relationship

Things that are in a proportionate relationship often move together. This is known as direct proportion. One sum goes up at a consistent rate when the other goes up. If one falls down, the other goes down too. Speed is a common example. If you go faster, you cover more ground in the same period of time. We write this mathematically as y \propto x, which means the equation:

y = kx

Here, k is the constant of proportionality. On a graph, this relationship appears as a straight line passing through the origin (0,0).

Inverse Proportion Relationship

Sometimes, variables have an indirect or inverse connection. In an inverse proportion, an increase in one quantity results in a decrease in the other. For instance, if you increase your speed, the time required to travel a fixed distance decreases. This is written as y \propto 1/x, and the formula is:

xy = k

In this case, the product of the two variables remains constant. When graphed on a Cartesian plane, an inverse relationship forms a rectangular hyperbola that never touches the axes.

  1. Recipe Adjustments: If a cookie recipe uses 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups of flour (1:2 ratio), and you want to triple it, you multiply both by 3. The new ratio is 3:6. Both ratios are equal to 0.5, so they remain in proportion.

  2. Map Scales: On a map, the distance between two points is directly proportional to the actual distance on the ground. The map's scale serves as the constant of proportionality.

  3. Currency and Shopping: If 5 pencils cost ₹20, we can find the cost of 8 pencils by setting up a proportion: 5/20 = 8/x. Using cross-multiplication, 5x = 160, so x = 32.

Percent Proportion

A specific type of proportion is the percent proportion, where a ratio is compared to a fraction with a denominator of 100.

  • Formula: Part/Whole = Percent/100

  • Example: To find what number is 10% of 50, you write x/50 = 10/100. Solving for x gives you 5.
