What is NID?

The National Institute of Design (NID) is an autonomous design institution under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Admission to the BDes programme is conducted through the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT).

NID History

The National Institute of Design (NID) is one of the oldest design colleges in India. It is also one of the country's well-known institutions for design education, research, and practice.

The first NID campus was established in Ahmedabad in 1961. After India's independence, there was a growing need to develop design education while preserving India's craft traditions and cultural identity.

To support this vision, the Government of India invited Charles and Ray Eames to study Indian crafts, materials, culture, and everyday objects.

They travelled across the country and observed different crafts and traditional practices. Their observations later became the foundation for the philosophy of NID.

Charles and Ray Eames and the India Report

In 1957, the Government of India invited Charles and Ray Eames, who were well-known product designers.

They studied:

After their study, they submitted the India Report to the Government of India on 7 April 1958.

How NID Was Established

The Ahmedabad campus is the original NID campus and is often referred to as the mother campus.

NID Governance

NID is an autonomous institution.

It functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and is governed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

Courses Offered at NID 

NID offers three levels of programs:

• BDes (Bachelor of Design): duration of 4 years

• MDes (Master of Design): duration of 2.5 years

• PhD in Design: available as full-time or part-time

NID BDes Seats 2027 

NID has five campuses for the BDes program. Here are the current seats at each campus, based on the official 2026 brochure:

• NID Ahmedabad (mother campus): 128 seats

• NID Andhra Pradesh: 75 seats

• NID Haryana: 75 seats

• NID Madhya Pradesh: 75 seats

• NID Assam: 75 seats

The total number of regular BDes seats is 428.

Overseas Supernumerary Seats 

There are also additional overseas supernumerary seats, based on the latest official NID BDes Admission Handbook for 2026. The total is 52 seats:

• Ahmedabad: 19 seats

• Andhra Pradesh: 11 seats

• Haryana: 11 seats

• Madhya Pradesh: 11 seats

A new NID has also been proposed in Eastern India during this year's budget. The number of seats may increase in the future.

Departments at NID Ahmedabad

NID Ahmedabad has eight specialized disciplines:

Communication Design

• Animation Film Design: 19 seats

• Exhibition Design: 13 seats

• Film and Video Communication: 13 seats

• Graphic Design: 19 seats

Industrial Design

• Ceramic and Glass Design: 13 seats

• Furniture and Interior Design: 13 seats

• Product Design: 19 seats

Departments at Other NID Campuses 

The other four NIDs (Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam) have 75 seats each, with three specialised disciplines:

• Communication Design: 25 seats

• Industrial Design: 25 seats

• Textile and Apparel Design: 25 seats

NID DAT 2027 Eligibility 

You are eligible if you are in class 12 this year or have already appeared for the class 12 exam.

There is no stream restriction. You can be from Science, Humanities, Arts, or Maths. Any stream can apply for this exam.

Different cut-offs apply to General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PWD, and Overseas categories for 2027-28. The exact date of birth cut-offs will be confirmed only on the official website and the official 2027-28 handbook.

Relaxation in age is given as follows:

• PWD category: 5 years

• OBC-NCL, SC, and ST categories: 3 years

Your date of birth on your Class 10 certificate or SSC certificate will be considered valid.

NID DAT 2027 Exam Pattern 

The NID exam is generally held between the second and third week of December. You have about 4.5 months left to prepare.

NID is usually one of the earliest major design entrance exams among government colleges.

Stage 1: DAT Prelims

In 2026, NID changed its format completely, without informing students in advance. The same format may continue in 2027, or it may change again.

In 2026, the question paper had only one part: Design Aptitude. This included drawing and sketching questions, along with problem-solving questions.

The paper was pen-and-paper based. This paper helps shortlist you for the second round.

Stage 2: DAT Mains 

The second stage has two parts:

• Studio Test: weightage of 60%

• In-Person Sensitivity Test: weightage of 40%, which includes your portfolio and interview

The exact dates for 2027-28 are not out yet. These dates will be released between September and October. The exam itself will generally be held in the second or third week of December.
