Robotics and Automation (RA) Paper Combinations: Second Choice Eligibility

For those who typically choose their core engineering discipline as their first GATE paper, the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper is primarily designed as a second option for specific branches:

  • Electrical Engineering (EE)

  • Mechanical Engineering (ME)

  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA)

  • Computer Science Engineering (CS)

The RA paper may be particularly beneficial for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students because a significant portion of the syllabus overlaps with their core subjects. Candidates from Computer Science and Data Science backgrounds may need to prepare several additional topics outside their core curriculum. 

Robotics and Automation (RA) Syllabus Breakdown

The RA syllabus is structured into two main parts: Section A (Compulsory) and Section B (Optional).

Section A: Compulsory Sections (70 Marks)

All candidates appearing for the RA paper must study this section, regardless of their core engineering branch.

A1: Engineering Mathematics

This section's content is consistent with the Engineering Mathematics syllabus typically found in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation GATE papers, requiring no specific branch-wise adjustment.

A2: Basics of Mechatronics

This section is critically important, forming the core principles of Robotics and Automation. It is compulsory for all aspiring RA candidates.

  • Network Elements (Network Theory): The syllabus is comprehensive, covering the entire scope of network theory as studied by Electrical, Electronics, and Instrumentation engineering students.

  • Digital Circuits (Digital Electronics): This covers the complete syllabus including Boolean algebra, combinational circuits (multiplexers, encoders, decoders), and sequential circuits (flip-flops, counters). This benefits CS, EC, and EE students but is a new challenge for Mechanical Engineering students.

  • Sensors: Includes all types of sensors and instruments, encompassing both mechanical and electrical sensors. This is a new topic for most Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students.

  • Actuators: Covers various actuators such as stepper motors, DC motors, and universal motors, distinct from typical core Electrical Engineering machine sections.

  • Engineering Mechanics: The entire Engineering Mechanics syllabus is included, primarily beneficial for Mechanical Engineering students.

  • Programming and Data Structures: Covers fundamental programming concepts and data structures, primarily beneficial for Computer Science students.

A3: Principles of Robotics and Automation

This segment aligns with elective subjects typically studied by Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students in their final year.

Section B: Optional Sections (15 Marks)

Candidates must choose one of these two sections during the exam. This offers a significant advantage to Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students due to alignment with their core syllabi. Computer Science and DA students, however, face a disadvantage as no specific CS or DA option is available.

B1: Electrical Engineering

This section is designed for Electrical Engineering students.

  • Analog Circuits and Embedded Systems: This section is more extensive than the Analog Electronics syllabus for GATE Electrical Engineering. It includes various filters, amplifiers, Op-Amps, oscillators, Schmitt triggers, ADCs, DACs, and Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). It explicitly includes Microprocessors and Microcontroller Applications, which are vast. Approximately 60-70% overlaps with GATE Electrical Analog Electronics, with the remaining 30% being new.

  • Signals and Systems: The syllabus is completely identical to the GATE syllabus for Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

  • Control Systems: The syllabus is identical to the GATE syllabus for Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

B2: Mechanical Engineering

This section is tailored for Mechanical Engineering students.

  • Mechanics of Materials (Strength of Materials): Covers the entire Strength of Materials syllabus as studied for GATE Mechanical Engineering.

  • Kinematics and Dynamics (Theory of Machines and Vibrations): The full syllabus for Theory of Machines and Vibrations is included.

  • Machine Design and Computer Integrated Manufacturing: Includes Machine Design, plus a portion of Production Engineering covering Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), CAD, CAM, and additive manufacturing. For Mechanical students, this content completely matches their core GATE Mechanical syllabus.

GATE RA Exam Pattern

The GATE RA exam follows a distinct pattern:

  • General Aptitude: This section is common for all papers and carries 15 marks.

  • Core Engineering Section: This section accounts for 85 marks and has a unique structure:

  • 70 Marks: Dedicated to fixed compulsory sections that all candidates must prepare.

  • 15 Marks: Consists of an optional section, allowing candidates to choose one out of two provided sections based on their preference during the exam.

Benefits and Scope of Robotics and Automation (RA)

Robotics and Automation is a highly active and developing field with significant global and Indian relevance. Academic institutions like IITs and IISc recognise Robotics as a leading specialisation, driving its prominence.

  • Electrical Engineering (EE): Benefits most, with approximately 70% of the combined RA syllabus (compulsory A + optional B1) matching their core EE syllabus. New topics include comprehensive Network Elements, Sensors, Actuators, Programming, Data Structures, and expanded Analog Circuits content.

  • Mechanical Engineering (ME): Also gains a substantial advantage, especially with Engineering Mechanics in compulsory Section A and full overlap in optional B2. Roughly 50-60% of the syllabus matches their core discipline. New areas include Network Elements, Digital Circuits (requiring significant effort), Sensors, Actuators, Programming, Data Structures, and Principles of Robotics & Automation.

  • Computer Science (CS) and Data Science (DA): Face a disadvantage due to significant new material. Only Digital Circuits, Programming, and Data Structures offer familiarity. For CS students, the Data Science and AI (DA) paper remains a more suitable second option.
