FMGE Internship-New Guidelines and List of Approved Medical Colleges

FMGE Internship: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued new guidelines for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) regarding internships in India. FMGs who completed their medical studies through online classes are required to complete a 2-year internship, while those who made up for online classes with physical onsite training must complete a 1-year internship. The NMC has approved 673 hospitals across India where FMGs can complete their internship, which is essential for registering to practice medicine in India. This internship must be completed within two years of passing the FMGE exam, and in special cases, it can be extended to 24 months. FMGs will receive a stipend equal to that of Indian medical interns, and there are no fees for the internship. The internship can be done at both teaching and non-teaching hospitals, and candidates can choose from hospitals across India. Additionally, FMGs impacted by the Russia-Ukraine War or COVID-19 are eligible for a 2-year internship, with the second year provided at approved hospitals. This stipend is also provided for the second year, which helps compensate for missed clinical training during their MBBS program.

What is an FMGE Internship?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) oversees medical education in India. It requires foreign medical graduates to complete a Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship from approved institutions, also known as an FMGE Internship. If applicable, this FMGE Internship must be finished within 2 years after passing the FMGE or NExT exam . It lasts 1 year and helps foreign graduates learn about medical standards and clinical practices in India before getting a license to practice here.

FMGE Internship Guidelines Issued By NMC

In a recent circular issued by the NMC the regulatory body explained how internships for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) should be conducted. Here are the significant points:
  • Internship Completion : Foreign medical graduates must complete a 12-month internship after passing the FMGE exam. This internship is essential for applying for registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) in India.
  • Duration of Internship : In exceptional cases, as per the rules of the NMC, the FMGE internship can be extended to 24 months. This extension is granted under specific circumstances.
  • Time Limit : Candidates must ensure they finish their internship within two years of passing the FMGE exam. Failure to do so may result in complications with the registration process.
  • Hospital/Institute Assignment : The State Medical Council assigns hospitals or institutes where foreign medical graduates can complete their internship. These assignments are based on availability and other relevant factors.
  • Fee Structure : Medical institutes and colleges are strictly prohibited from charging any fee for the FMGE internship. This ensures equal access to internship opportunities for all eligible candidates.
  • Stipend Eligibility : Foreign medical graduates serving as interns will receive a stipend equivalent to that of an Indian medical intern. The stipend amount is determined by state government rules and regulations, ensuring fairness among interns regardless of nationality.
  • State Domicile : The National Medical Commission (NMC) has instructed state medical councils not to deny foreign medical graduates (FMGs) the opportunity to intern at medical colleges based on their domicile. According to NMC, FMGs can complete their internship at any medical college in any state or union territory (UT) if they meet the eligibility criteria.

What is a Two-Year FMGE Internship?

According to the National Medical Commission, the two-year internship rule applies only to foreign medical graduates (FMGs) who were in their last year of medical school and had to return to India due to COVID-19 or the Russia-Ukraine War. 2 Year Internship for FMGE approved by NMC includes the following details.
  • NMC approved a 2-year FMGE Internship for medical graduates affected by the Russia-Ukraine War/COVID-19.
  •  Candidates who received a completion certificate by June 30, 2025, needed to complete this internship.
  • Initially, those who completed 1 year of internship had to finish the remaining year at another medical college if seats were available.
  • NMC later relaxed this requirement and provided a list of Non-Teaching hospitals for completing the FMGE Internship.

FMGE Internship Stipend

A stipend is like a salary given to medical graduates for their hospital work. There's no set amount for the FMGE Internship stipend, but as per NMC rules, State Medical Councils must make sure that foreign medical graduates get paid the same as Indian medical graduates. Following are the details of the FMGE Internship Stipend:
  • State Medical Councils must ensure that no FMGE internship fee is charged and that foreign medical graduates receive the same facilities as Indian graduates.
  • The appropriate state authority determines the stipend amount.
  • For the 2-year internship, the stipend is paid only during the second year, as the first year compensates for missed clinical training during their MBBS course abroad.
