International Biology Olympiad 2025: The International Biology Olympiad is a biology olympiad for students under 20. IBO authorities are responsible for conducting the Olympiad every year. It is known as one of the most recognized biology olympiads organized worldwide.

There are 75 participating countries in IBO. There are four life sciences contestants participating in the competition. Candidates have to face theoretical and practical exams to show their knowledge of biology and qualify for the olympiad.

International Biology Olympiad 2025

IBO is an international biology olympiad organised for member countries. It is an annual occurring event. This time the 36th International Biology Olympiad is scheduled to be held in Quezon, Philippines.

The event is to be organized from 20th July to 27th July 2025. IBO Olympiad tests the practical and theory-related knowledge of candidates. Winners of the olympiad are selected after careful consideration of the marks scored in the theory and practical exams. 

Stages Of International Biology Olympiad

IBO exam is organized in five stages. Candidates have to qualify all the five stages to participate in the International Biology Olympiad. 

Stage 1 National Standard Examination In Biology (NSEB): ATBS (The Association Of Teachers In Biology Sciences) organizes NSE exams in the biology subject. The syllabus of the exam is biology topics taught upto class 12th. 

Stage 2  Indian National Olympiad In Biology: Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is responsible for organizing the INBO olympiad in biology and other streams. The organization conducts the INBO olympiad testing the knowledge of students in Biology subject. Objective-type questions are asked in the olympiad. Indian National Olympiad In Biology is conducted in January. 

Stage 3 Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC): 35 students go for the orientation cum selection camp from INO in biology. Several experimental-based tests are conducted for the skill refinement of students. 

Stage 4 Attend Pre-Departure Training Camp: Students get training related to theory-related concepts in the HBCSE library. This training is conducted before going to the IBO Olympiad. 

Stage 5 Participate In International Biology Olympiad: After completing the training, qualified students participate in IBO. 

IBO 2025 Key Highlights

Indian Biology Olympiad is conducted annually. The exam mode is theoretical and practical and conducted in english. The 2026s IBO is organized in Quezon City, Philippines.

International Biology Olympiad Eligibility

Students interested in participating in IBO. It is essential to fulfil minimum eligibility requirements. The age should be not more than 20 years old. 

• Candidates should be a citizens of participating countries in the Indian Biology Olympiad. 

• Candidates must be selected from National Olympiad Examination in Biology. 

• Candidates should have a valid passport.

IBO Registration 2025

IBO Registration is conducted through online mode. Candidates can visit the website https://www.ibo2025.org/registration to complete the registration process.

• The candidate should be the organizer of the National Biology Olympiad (NBO) and get recognition from the education ministry. 

• Provide the updated information on the NBO contract.

• Follow the rules of the IBO association. 

• Pay the membership fee annually to IBO for Olympiad registration.

IBO Syllabus 2025

The International Biology Olympiad is conducted in two processes i.e. theoretical and practical. A practical exam is conducted to know the competitor's ability to solve biological questions. It is using the skills of biological methods used in laboratories. 

IBO Exam Format

The International Biology Olympiad consists of theory and practical-based questions asked in the olympiad. Candidates get the questions testing their knowledge of biology subject. 

• Theoretical: Candidates get 100 tasks to be completed in IBO. Close-end questions are asked including MCQs and true-false questions. It tests the knowledge and abilities of candidates in biology. It carries 50% of the weightage of the total.

• Practical: Candidates get practical tasks assigned to them covering sections of Biomedical Sciences, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Systematics, and Microbiology. International candidates participating in the olympiad are asked to work on a group project on the topic selected. The practical section carries 50% weightage.

IBO Awards & Recognition

IBO awards are given to the top-performing candidates in the olympiad. The t-score method is applied to determine the winners by the Olympiad authorities. Winners of the olympiad are selected after considering the marks of theoretical and practical.
