Object Pronouns Definition

Object pronouns are a type of pronoun used in English to replace nouns that function as the object of a verb or a preposition in a sentence. Object pronouns serve the purpose of making sentences less repetitive and more concise.

  • The teacher praised you for your hard work.

Indirect Object Pronouns:

Object of a Preposition:

  • We need to talk about us.
  • He's always there for you.

How to Identify Object Pronouns

Identifying object pronouns in a sentence involves recognizing words that take the place of nouns that function as the object of a verb or a preposition. Here's how you can identify object pronouns:

Understand the Role of Objects: First, understand the grammatical concept of objects in a sentence. Objects are nouns or pronouns that receive the action of a verb or follow a preposition. There are two types of objects:

Direct Object: The noun or pronoun that receives the action directly. For example, in the sentence "She kicked the ball," "the ball" is the direct object.

Indirect Object: The noun or pronoun that receives the direct object. For example, in the sentence "She gave him the book," "him" is the indirect object, and "the book" is the direct object.

Look for Pronouns in Object Positions: In sentences, look for words that appear in the position of direct or indirect objects. These words are likely to be object pronouns. Common object pronouns include "me," "you," "him," "her," "it," "us," "you," and "them."

Check for Pronoun Function: Examine the pronoun's function in the sentence. Is it receiving the action of a verb or following a preposition? If so, it's likely an object pronoun.

Examples of identifying object pronouns in sentences:
  • "She gave him the book." In this sentence, "him" is the object pronoun functioning as the indirect object.
  • "I saw them at the park." In this sentence, "them" is the object pronoun functioning as the direct object.
  • "They laughed at me." In this sentence, "me" is the object pronoun functioning as the object of the preposition "at."

Distinguish Object Pronouns from Subject Pronouns: Object pronouns are not the same as subject pronouns, which are used as the subject of a sentence or clause. Subject pronouns include "I," "you," "he," "she," "it," "we," "you," and "they." It's important to differentiate between subject and object pronouns based on their function in the sentence.
