Potassium Cyanide Structure

In an aqueous solution, KCN splits into cyanide ( C N - ) and hydrated potassium ( K + ) ions. With six cyanide ions surrounding each potassium ion and vice versa, KCN exhibits a solid structure similar to sodium chloride. The cyanide ions rotate at such a high rate that their time-averaged form is spherical despite being diatomic and less symmetric than chloride. This free rotation is impeded at low temperatures and high pressure, leading to a less symmetric crystal structure with the cyanide ions organized in sheets.

For the production of nitriles and carboxylic acids, especially in the von Richter reaction, KCN and sodium cyanide (NaCN) are often employed in organic synthesis. Combined with a carbonyl chemical like an aldehyde or ketone in the presence of ammonium carbonate, it is also used to create hydantoins, which can be helpful synthetic intermediates. KCN is employed as a photographic fixer in the wet plate collodion method. Silver that has not been rendered insoluble by the developer is soluble when the KCN is applied. The picture is revealed and stabilized in this way, losing its sensitivity to light. Although many contemporary wet plate photographers choose sodium thiosulfate or other less hazardous fixers, KCN is still employed.
