What are backlogs?

Do Backlogs Matter for Study Abroad is explained here. A backlog is just a test that you did not pass the first time. All previous backlogs must be cleared to enroll in any foreign program successfully. If you were absent, verify with your institution to see if they marked 'absent' or 'Zero' in the test or subject you failed to appear, as 'Zero' in the score column indicates backlog rather than absenteeism.

What is a backlog certificate?

It is a certificate given by your educational institution that includes information on your backlogs. If you have no backlogs, you will not receive the same treatment from your institution. Even if you have no backlogs, your international university may request an academic transcript to validate your academic records.

How are backlogs counted?

Backlogs are counted differently among institutions. While some may measure the number of attempts to clear a failed topic, others may consider the number of subject backlogs. To clarify, let's divide them into two categories:
  • The number of failed subjects equals the number of backlogs: Countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom view failed subjects as being backlogged, regardless of how many attempts were made to pass them. For example, if you fail one subject but retake it three times in the next semester to pass it, the number of backlogs will be counted as one, and the number of tries, three, will be ignored.
  • The number of attempts to pass failed subjects corresponds to the number of backlogs: Countries such as Australia define the number of attempts as backlogs. For example, if you fail a single subject but attempt it three times in successive semesters to pass it, the number of backlogs will be counted as three because it equals the number of attempts. These countries use several attempts to determine your dedication to that subject/education.

It should be noted that you can apply for admission to your selected university even if you have active backlogs. If accepted, the university will issue you a conditional offer letter with the expectation that you will complete all of your backlogs before beginning your academic program.

Top countries that accept backlogs

You can still achieve your goals of studying abroad despite backlogs. Do Backlogs Matter for Study Abroad? Here, just make sure you know the number of backlogs accepted and the conditions for acceptance in the country of your choice. Criteria differ by nation, such as:

Canada

Several Canadian colleges will accept applications with up to five backlogs if the bachelor's degree has a minimum of 70%. However, some other universities accept students with seven or eight backlogs and a minimal GPA of 65%. Applicants with more than ten or twelve backlogs remain eligible for Canadian postgraduate diplomas. However, admission is granted to these students on an individual basis.

UK

Although UK colleges will accept candidates with 15 backlogs, a solid performance on the English language proficiency test, such as the IELTS , is required, with an overall band score of 6.5. Although there are no clear conditions for backlog approval, admission requires a high IELTS score.

Australia

Australian institutions offer a wide range of degrees and study programs and accept applications with a maximum of 7-8 backlogs, which makes it one of the popular appealing study destinations for international students. The maximum backlog will be two or three if the university belongs to the Group of Eight. You should be informed that Australian Institutes regard the number of trials as backlogs. As a result, if you tried three times to complete a certain subject, those three attempts will be recognized as three backlogs.

US

Many of the American institutions prefer students with no backlog. In exceptional cases, they can accept up to five backlogs if you have a high GRE score between 315 and 325. Furthermore, admission is determined by the university in cases where there are 10–12 backlogs.

Ireland

Universities in Ireland accept candidates with up to four or five backlogs. However, they are extremely strict, and some only allow two or three backlogs.

New Zealand

Universities in New Zealand normally accept applications from candidates with less than five backlogs, although this might increase in some cases depending on the university and discipline. To enroll for college in New Zealand as an applicant with a backlog, you must have a decent IELTS score. For instance, an applicant with an IELTS band of 6.5 and an adequate amount of extracurricular activities listed in the SOP may use these characteristics to compensate for their backlogs.
