Examples can be also used to convey the main idea of the essay to the examiner. It makes your writing more clear and constructive. Here are some specific ways that can help you put examples in the IELTS Writing Test effectively:

Use Clear Linking Devices

IELTS linking words or phrases are an effective way that can improve the readability of the essay. A few commonly used linking words in the  IELTS Exam are as follows:

Personal vs Non-Personal Examples

Candidates can use personal life experiences and adventures to use personal examples in IELTS essay writing. However, candidates are advised to use formal and academic language to use personal experiences in their essays.

  • Example of a personal reference: "When I was studying at university, I used to rely on buses as I couldn't afford a car."

  • Improved formal version: "University students who face financial difficulties often depend on public transportation due to its affordability."

Avoid Using Made-Up Statistics

Many aspirants use statistical information while structuring their IELTS essays. IELTS prompts accept statistical data, however, candidates should avoid using real datas, specific numbers, or names.

  • Instead of: “According to a 2020 report, 73% of commuters…”

  • Say: “In many countries, a significant number of people prefer public transport due to its lower cost and environmental benefits.”

Place the Example After Developing the Idea

Always use examples only after explaining your point of view. Do not start the paragraph with an example(s). Examples, are generally, used to support the given point of the candidate. This writing style can improve the standard of writing and improve fluency and readability of the content.

  • Poor placement: “For example, young children learning English early can be more open-minded. Therefore…”
  • Better placement: “Introducing a second language in early education exposes children to diverse cultures and ways of thinking. For example, children in bilingual programs often show higher cultural tolerance in adulthood.”

How to give examples in an IELTS essay?

In IELTS Writing Task 2, give examples by first explaining your point, then using linking phrases like “For example,” or “For instance,” to introduce a relevant, realistic situation. Keep your example brief and clearly connected to the main idea without dominating the paragraph.

How do I introduce an example in an essay?

You can introduce an example using phrases such as “To illustrate,” “For example,” or “One such case is...” after explaining your main point. Avoid starting a paragraph with an example—develop your idea first, then support it with a short, specific illustration.
