Sample Questions With Answers

You can use these example complaint letters as a guide while trying IELTS General Writing Task 1.

Question 1

Your hotel room had several issues when you were there recently for a business meeting. Complain in writing to the hotel's management. Include:
  • Where did you stay?
  • What problems there were?
  • How they may address your complaints?
Sample Answer 1 Dear Intercontinental management team, I am writing to draw your attention to a few problems I noticed when recently visiting your Los Angeles store. The conference on sustainable solutions for underdeveloped nations was held last weekend, and I was sleeping in room 302 with a group from my company. Most of the issues were in my room. It took many hours for someone to fix the air conditioner after I reported to the reception desk that it wasn't working when I first arrived. There was also a problem with the television, and the bathroom had a little unpleasant smell. I reported to the front desk about all of this, but they didn't seem concerned about making any adjustments right away. If you have similar problems in the future, I recommend moving the guest to a separate room while they work on the repairs. Additionally, you should examine your rooms again before guests come to ensure that no concerns remain unresolved. I hope you will pay attention to my advice and I look forward to your reply. Best regards, Pawan Kumar

Question 2

"You had a poor dinner at a restaurant. Send a letter to the restaurant's manager explaining your bad experience and asking for a refund. Write a letter highlighting the following points:
  • Describe what happened.
  • What do you hope to happen?
  • Make a refund request
Sample Answer 2 To the manager, I'm writing to express my disappointment after dining at your restaurant yesterday. Unfortunately, I had an unpleasant time at your restaurant recently because of several problems. I walked into the dine-in and saw that the dishes were in terrible condition, clearly unwashed and unclean. I reported this to the staff, and they responded in an unexpectedly harsh and disrespectful manner. I tried to fix the situation, but nobody seemed interested in doing so, so I had to watch the entire movie with my meal on unclean and unsanitary silverware. The food was poor in addition to the dishes' unsatisfactory condition. The plate of prawn curry I ordered never showed up until I got up to leave the restaurant. The dish was nearly inedible due to its poor flavor and stale appearance. Even when I expressed my dissatisfaction to the staff, they ignored my concerns and even made fun of me inappropriately for bringing up the subject. I would like to seek a full refund of the money I spent because this experience was very unsatisfactory. I would also advise your employees to avoid disappointing customers by not promising them standards of service that they cannot provide. Regards, Mohan Das
