Goa History

During the Iron Age, Goa was ruled by the Mauryan and Satavahana Empires. The Mauryas referred to Goa as Sunaparant and incorporated it into their province of Aparanta. Later, the Kadamba dynasty ruled Goa from the 10th to 14th centuries, marking what is often considered a golden age for the region. They traded with Greek and Roman merchants and established political and economic partnerships with neighboring states. In 1510, the Portuguese invaded Goa , defeating the Bijapur Sultanate. Their rule lasted for approximately 450 years and was marked by significant cultural influences and the infamous Goa Inquisition. Goa remained under Portuguese rule despite India’s independence in 1947.

History of Goa Liberation

Goa was under Portuguese colonial rule for over 450 years, from 1510 to 1961. Efforts for liberation began in the early 20th century, with prominent leaders like Tristão de Bragança Cunha advocating for Goa’s freedom. The movement for Goa's liberation gained momentum after India gained independence in 1947. Despite being part of the Indian subcontinent, Goa remained under Portuguese control. The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, initiated diplomatic efforts to negotiate with Portugal for the decolonization of Goa. However, these efforts were largely ineffective as Portugal was determined to hold on to its colonies. The turning point came in December 1961 , when India launched a military operation to liberate Goa. The operation, known as Operation Vijay, was a significant step in India's efforts to integrate Goa into the Indian Union. It was a success and led to the surrender of Portuguese forces, ultimately ending their colonial presence in the region.

Goa Liberation Operation Name

The military operation to liberate Goa was called Operation Vijay , meaning "Victory." The operation was well-coordinated and involved the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force. The objective was straightforward: to liberate Goa, Daman, and Diu from Portuguese colonial rule. The operation began on 18th December 1961 and concluded within 36 hours, resulting in the annexation of Goa, Daman, and Diu into India.

Goa Statehood Day

While Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule in 1961, it wasn’t until 1987 that Goa was officially recognized as a state within the Indian Union. Before that, Goa Daman and Diu were a Union Territory. Later, Goa, Daman, and Diu Reorganization Act, of 1987 granted statehood to Goa on May 30, 1987. Since then May 30 has been celebrated as Goa Statehood Day every year.
