The history of International Anti-Corruption Day dates back to 31st October 2003, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). This treaty, signed by 140 countries, entered into force on 14th December 2005. Recognizing the importance of promoting global awareness about the issue, the UN General Assembly designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day in 2003 . One way to measure the extent of corruption in different countries is the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) , published annually by Transparency International. The CPI rates countries on a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 means highly corrupt and 100 means very clean . The CPI helps policymakers and organisations spot problems and create better strategies to fight corruption. India’s rank in the Global Corruption Perception Index has been concerning. In 2023 , India was ranked 93rd out of 180 countries, with a score of 40 . - Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988: This act defines corruption and sets penalties for offenses committed by public servants. It was amended in 2018 and expanded the scope of the PCA to include penalties for bribe-givers.
- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: This act replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860. It modernized and reformed various provisions related to corruption and included punishments for bribery.
- Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013: This act establishes an ombudsman mechanism to address grievances related to corruption and ensure accountability in public administration.
- Whistle Blowers Protection Act, 2014: This act safeguards individuals who report corrupt practices, protecting them from retaliation and promoting transparency.
- Other Legal Measures: Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988, and Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015.

- State Anti-Corruption Bureaus (ACBs): ACBs handle corruption investigations at the state level, ensuring accountability among state government officials.
