History of National Energy Conservation Day
The concept of National Energy Conservation Day was introduced in 1991 when the Indian government recognized the urgent need to manage and conserve energy efficiently. The initiative came from the Ministry of Power to encourage citizens and industries to adopt energy-saving methods.
The
first National Energy Conservation Day
was celebrated on December 14, 1991. Since then, December 14 has become a day dedicated to raising awareness about energy conservation, conducting seminars, and workshops, and awarding individuals and organizations that excel in energy efficiency practices.
National Energy Conservation Award 2024
One of the key highlights of National Energy Conservation Day 2024 will be the presentation of the
34th National Energy Conservation Awards.
The awards celebrate innovations and significant contributions toward energy efficiency. Since its inception, the awards have encouraged industries and institutions to adopt innovative technologies and strategies, setting new standards for sustainable energy practices. The list of shortlisted awardees for NECA 2024 has been released at the

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is a key organization in promoting energy conservation in India.
Established by the government in 2002,
the BEE’s mission is to encourage the efficient use of energy and to reduce energy intensity in the economy. The BEE plays a significant role in coordinating energy conservation programs, launching energy efficiency campaigns, and certifying energy-efficient products.
Significance of National Energy Conservation Day 2024
The significance of National Energy Conservation Day 2024 goes beyond just raising awareness. This day serves as a wake-up call for individuals, organizations, and the government to evaluate their energy usage patterns and implement strategies that help save energy. The celebration of this day is a reflection of India's energy policies, which include:
Reducing Carbon Emissions:
By saving energy, carbon emissions are reduced, which helps mitigate the effects of climate change and global warming.
Economic Benefits:
Energy conservation lowers energy bills, making it more affordable for households and businesses.
Resource Managemen
t: It helps in the sustainable use of natural resources like coal, petroleum, and natural gas, ensuring they last longer for future generations.
Public Awareness:
Programs conducted on this day help educate people about how to save energy in their daily lives, thus fostering a culture of conservation.
Government Initiatives for Energy Conservation
The Indian government has implemented several initiatives to promote energy conservation and sustainability. Some key government initiatives for energy conservation include:
Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme:
Targets energy reduction in industries by cutting Specific Energy Consumption (SEC), saving ₹55,000 crore annually and reducing 110 million tons of CO2 emissions.
"Go Electric" Campaign:
Launched in 2021 to promote Electric Vehicles (EVs) and electrical cooking, raising awareness about their benefits and government initiatives.
EV Yatra Portal and App:
Launched in 2022 to promote e-mobility, providing a database of EV charging stations for users to find nearby compatible chargers.
Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA):
Promotes energy-efficient LEDs and fans. Over 36.87 crore bulbs distributed, saving 176.2 billion kWh annually and cutting 125 million tons of CO2 emissions.
Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP):
Replaces conventional street lights with LEDs. Over 1.30 crore LED street lights installed, saving 8.76 billion kWh annually and reducing CO2 emissions by 6.03 million tons.
How to Celebrate National Energy Conservation Day 2024?
National Energy Conservation Day emphasizes the urgent need for a collective approach towards energy conservation to combat climate change and promote a sustainable future. Here are some practical steps to reduce energy consumption:
Use Energy-Efficient Appliances:
Choose appliances with high energy efficiency ratings, such as five-star rated refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines.
Turn Off Unused Devices:
Make it a habit to turn off lights, fans, and electronic devices when you leave a room or when they are not in use.
Switch to LED Lighting
: Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED lights, which use significantly less energy and last much longer.
Use Energy-Efficient Cooking Methods:
Use lids on pots to cook food faster and use microwaves, pressure cookers, or slow cookers instead of conventional ovens when possible.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:
Practice waste reduction and recycling to conserve energy and resources.
National Energy Conservation Day 2024 is a call to action to prioritise energy efficiency. By adopting sustainable practices, we can ensure a greener, more secure future for generations to come.
