Role of Tourism Sector in Indian Economy

The tourism industry in India is projected to contribute around INR 21.15 trillion ($253 billion) to India's GDP in 2024. The tourism sector is a crucial pillar of India’s economy. In 2022, India's tourism sector contributed Rs 15.7 trillion to the economy. Here’s how it contributes:
  • Employment: The sector supports about 43 million jobs, accounting for nearly 8% of total employment in India. It creates jobs across sectors like hospitality, transport, and retail.
  • Foreign Exchange : Tourism generates significant foreign exchange earnings. Report 2023-24 of Ministry of Tourism Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) were around ₹2,31,927 crore.
  • Infrastructure Development : Tourism promotes infrastructure development, particularly in remote and underdeveloped areas. It leads to improvements in transport, accommodation, sanitation, and communication.
  • Cultural Preservation: Tourism also plays a crucial role in preserving India's rich cultural heritage. It supports traditional arts, crafts, and the maintenance of heritage sites.
