In 2023, tourism spending in India reached $174 billion, up from $127 billion in 2019. - Spiritual Tourism is the journey to sacred and spiritual destinations. For example, visiting Varanasi for its religious significance or the Golden Temple in Amritsar for spiritual peace.
- Culinary Tourism is experiencing India’s diverse food culture. For example, tasting street food in Delhi or enjoying the famous biryani in Hyderabad.
Role of Tourism Sector in Indian Economy
The tourism industry in India is projected to contribute around INR 21.15 trillion ($253 billion) to India's GDP in 2024. The tourism sector is a crucial pillar of India’s economy. In 2022, India's tourism sector contributed Rs 15.7 trillion to the economy. Here’s how it contributes:- Employment: The sector supports about 43 million jobs, accounting for nearly 8% of total employment in India. It creates jobs across sectors like hospitality, transport, and retail.
- Foreign Exchange : Tourism generates significant foreign exchange earnings. Report 2023-24 of Ministry of Tourism Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) were around ₹2,31,927 crore.
- Infrastructure Development : Tourism promotes infrastructure development, particularly in remote and underdeveloped areas. It leads to improvements in transport, accommodation, sanitation, and communication.
- Cultural Preservation: Tourism also plays a crucial role in preserving India's rich cultural heritage. It supports traditional arts, crafts, and the maintenance of heritage sites.
Government Initiatives for Tourism in India
The government has launched various schemes to boost tourism:- Swadesh Darshan Scheme: A major initiative to develop tourism infrastructure in India, the scheme focuses on various thematic circuits like cultural, heritage, and adventure tourism. Swadesh Darshan 2.0 has been introduced to focus on sustainable and responsible tourism.
- Dekho Apna Desh Campaign : Aimed at encouraging Indian citizens to explore their own country, this initiative promotes domestic tourism.
- Incredible India Campaign: The Ministry of Tourism promotes India through media campaigns in both domestic and international markets under the "Incredible India" brand.
- PRASHAD Scheme: Under the "National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)," financial assistance is provided to enhance infrastructure at religious and spiritual sites.
- National Strategy for Adventure Tourism: This strategy was formulated to position India as a preferred global destination for adventure tourism.
- Simplified e-Visa System: The introduction of e-Visas for categories like tourist, business, medical, and conference visas for nationals from 167 countries simplifies access for international visitors.
- NIDHI+ Digital Platform: The National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI) has been upgraded to NIDHI+ to facilitate the digitalization of hospitality services, including accommodation, travel agencies, and tour operators.
