In 1971, Representative Bella Abzug from New York pushed for a special day to honor women's rights, and in 1973 , the U.S. Congress officially designated August 26 as "Women’s Equality Day." This date was chosen to remember when the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was certified in 1920, giving women the right to vote. This achievement was the result of a long struggle for women's rights that began in 1848 at the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York . Economic Participation: Women hold only 14% of top executive positions in major companies, according to the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and 5% of CEO roles (Deloitte report). Gender bias in promotions and a preference for male candidates are major roadblocks to women’s equality at workplace. Health and Survival: Also ranked 142nd in GGI , India struggles with women's health and safety. Maternal health, access to care, and gender-based violence remain critical concerns, despite various initiatives by the government. Educational Opportunities: Ranking 112th, India has improved women's literacy rates, but rural areas still face significant challenges. Many girls lack access to quality education, limiting their future opportunities. Further, crime against women continues to be a serious issue as evident in the NCRB Report . The 73rd and 74th CAA mandate a reservation of 1/3 of seats for women in Municipalities and Panchayati Raj institutions. Social Protection: The Swadhar Greh Scheme offers shelter, food, and medical care to women in distress, ensuring they have access to basic needs.
