For Vasu Sharma, preparing for JEE Main Paper 2 meant building on his strengths while working on the areas that needed more attention. With a natural interest in sketching and design, he chose the architecture route and prepared through PW’s courses. After taking a drop, Vasu focused on making his preparation more consistent, especially for aptitude, mathematics, and drawing.
His approach eventually helped him secure 99.87 percentile in JEE Main Paper 2, the highest percentile in Himachal Pradesh, giving him the opportunity to move ahead with his plans for architecture.
Vasu’s preparation involved attending lectures, solving DPPs, and regularly practising drawing. Since sketching had been one of his strengths from childhood, he used consistent practice to make it an even stronger part of his preparation.
“Ma’am, I studied from PW, and I attended all the lectures and DPP. I solved all the DPP, and they helped me a lot for the exam. And for drawing particularly, ma’am, I practice daily. I try to practice one sketch daily. And I had a knack for sketching since childhood, so drawing was my strength.”
This routine gave Vasu a clear way to work on both his coursework and drawing skills. For students who find drawing difficult, he also emphasised understanding fundamentals such as perspective, shading, and light and shadow, along with practising for at least 30–40 minutes every day.
Vasu had already attempted the examination earlier, but his next attempt brought a more focused approach. He identified aptitude as an important part of the paper and understood that it could not be prepared effectively in a single day.
“Ma’am, last year I also took the batch for the exam, but this year, ma’am, it helped me.”
His preparation also involved paying attention to previous-year questions and the recurring patterns in the aptitude section. This helped him understand what the examination demanded instead of relying only on broad preparation.
As part of his preparation, Vasu studied through PW and followed different resources for the sections of the examination. He used the PW Prayas batch for Mathematics, while his design preparation was supported through PW’s design course.
“Ma’am, for Maths I followed Prayas batch in PW, and for the Aptitude part, I saw previous year questions. Previous year aptitude questions I tried to clear; mostly repeated same pattern aate hain. And ma’am, drawing to inki strength thi na, practice…”
The combination of lectures, DPPs, previous-year questions, and regular drawing practice helped Vasu structure his preparation around the different requirements of JEE Main Paper 2.
Vasu also had a specific strategy for dividing his time during the examination. Rather than spending too long on one section, he attempted the aptitude portion first, followed it with drawing, and kept Mathematics for the end.
“Ma’am, I started with the aptitude part in the exam, and I tried to finish it in 30 to 40 minutes. Then, ma’am, most of the time was given to the drawing, and I gave the remaining time to maths.”
He also avoided unnecessary risks in Mathematics by attempting only the questions he was confident about, keeping negative marking in mind. This allowed him to use his stronger sections effectively while managing the section he found comparatively weaker.
Beyond individual subjects, Vasu considered consistency and focus central to his preparation. He divided his study time carefully and tried to make every study session purposeful rather than simply counting the number of hours spent studying.
“Ma'am, I believe consistency and focus are the main key players. Ma'am, I used to divide my time and never used to do study sessions. I tried to make as much focus as possible and make every minute useful from it.”
Taking a drop also came with the uncertainty of whether the next attempt would work out. Vasu acknowledged that anxiety and fear are common during preparation but chose to focus on studying rather than letting those thoughts interfere with his routine.
“Ma'am, I think everybody feels the confusion and anxiety and fear for the exam, but I controlled the feeling and just focused on the study part and completed the exam. And ma'am, we should not think about anything else.”
With his 99.87 percentile in JEE Main Paper 2, Vasu’s final advice centred on remaining calm and focused, particularly in the final days before the examination.
“Ma'am, my advice is don't panic at the last minute of the exam. Like, two to three days before the exam, we should be very focused and don't panic at all, and just study with full focus.”
His journey shows that preparation does not necessarily mean being equally strong in every section. Identifying strengths, working consistently on weaker areas, practising regularly, and maintaining focus can help aspirants make their preparation more effective. For Vasu, this approach culminated in 99.87 percentile and the highest percentile in Himachal Pradesh, marking an important step toward his goal of pursuing architecture.
