Preparation of Borax

The production of borax involves the utilization of colemanite (Ca 2 B 6 O 11 ) and follows this chemical reaction:

Ca 2 B 6 O 11 + 2Na 2 CO 3 → (Under the influence of heat) → Na 2 B 4 O 7 + 2NaBO 2 + 2CaCO 3 (precipitate)

To further refine this, sodium metaborate (NaBO 2 ) is treated with carbon dioxide to yield borax, with the reaction as follows:

4NaBO 2 + CO 2 → Na 2 B 4 O 7 + Na 2 CO 3

Na 2 B 4 O 7 ·10H 2 O + 2 HCl → 4 B(OH) 3 + 2 NaCl + 5 H 2 O

Borax is particularly highly soluble in ethylene glycol and only sparingly soluble in acetone.
