IIT Roorkee M.Tech Admissions 2026: IIT Roorkee, one of India's oldest and most prestigious institutions, has announced M.Tech, M.Arch, and MURP admissions for the 2026-27 academic year. Known for offering the highest number of M.Tech courses among IITs, it provides diverse opportunities. The comprehensive admission process, including eligibility and shortlisting based on normalized GATE scores, is now open for prospective candidates.
IIT Roorkee has officially commenced its M.Tech admissions for the 2026-27 academic year, with the information brochure and application link now active. As one of the oldest IITs, it offers the highest number of M.Tech courses across all IITs, totaling 58 post-graduate programs. A notable feature is the availability of certain courses with low GATE score cut-offs, broadening admission possibilities. The detailed 32-page Information Brochure outlines M.Tech, M.Arch, and MURP programs for the academic year.
Key dates for the IIT Roorkee M.Tech admission process are:
Application Portal Activation: March 27, 2026
Application Deadline: April 20, 2026
Admission Registration: July 11-12, 2026
Document Verification: July 13-14, 2026
Commencement of Classes: July 16, 2026
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for M.Tech admissions at IIT Roorkee:
GATE Qualification: A valid GATE scorecard from the last three years (2024, 2025, 2026) is mandatory.
IIT Graduates: Graduates from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are exempt from the GATE score requirement.
General/EWS/OBC Categories: A minimum of 60% marks or a 6.0 CGPA in their qualifying degree.
SC/ST/PWD Categories: A minimum of 55% marks or a 5.50 CGPA in their qualifying degree.
Final Year Students: Students currently in their final year of graduation are eligible to apply.
International Candidates: Separate admission procedures are in place for international applicants.
IIT Roorkee employs a distinctive shortlisting methodology that prioritizes normalized GATE marks over raw scores. This ensures a fair comparison across different GATE papers where maximum scores can vary significantly.
Calculation of Normalized Marks:
Normalized Marks = (Marks obtained by the candidate / Maximum marks awarded to AIR 1 in that GATE paper) * 100
Example 1: If a candidate scored 60 marks and the All India Rank 1 (AIR 1) in that specific GATE paper achieved 100 marks, the normalized marks would be (60 / 100) * 100 = 60.
Example 2: If a candidate scored 60 marks, but the AIR 1 score in that paper was 90, the normalized marks would be (60 / 90) * 100 ≈ 66.67.
Impact of High AIR 1 Scores: A significant issue observed this year is that certain branches have registered exceptionally high AIR 1 scores. This scenario will consequently lead to a reduction in the normalized marks for all other candidates in those specific branches, potentially affecting admission prospects, particularly for interdisciplinary programs where competition might be high.
This special initiative is designed to encourage and support academically exceptional female applicants.
Eligibility Criteria for the Scheme:
Female candidates who are the first rank holder (Gold Medalist) in their qualifying undergraduate degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Female candidates who are the first rank holder (Gold Medalist) in their qualifying undergraduate degree from other institutions ranked within the top 50 overall category by NIRF.
