Algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, mites, insects, worms, and various plants collectively contribute to the detritus food chain. Decomposers and detritivores utilize the energy derived from the decomposing organic material, becoming prey for smaller carnivores.
Among these carnivores are creatures like maggots, which, in turn, serve as food for larger carnivores such as frogs, snakes, and other meat-eating species.
