  • Articular Ligaments: They are located within joints. It controls and facilitates specific movements. Its examples include the collateral ligaments in the knee.
  • Cruciate Ligaments: They form a cross shape within certain joints. It is essential for stabilizing joints, particularly the knee. Its examples include the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL).
  • Extracapsular Ligaments: They are positioned outside the joint capsule. It provides supplementary stability for joints. Its examples include the collateral ligaments in the knee.
  • Intracapsular Ligaments: They are found inside the joint capsule. It contributes to stability while allowing a broader range of motion.
  • Peritoneal Ligaments: They are folds of the peritoneum in the abdominal cavity. It supports and connects various abdominal organs. Its examples include the broad ligament supporting the uterus.

Tendons are important parts of our body that help us move and stay strong. They are like tough cords that connect our muscles to our bones. There are different types of tendons with specific jobs. Flexor tendons are near our hands and wrists. It allows us to bend our joints and curl our fingers. Extensor tendons help us straighten our joints and extend our toes. Ligamentous tendons are connectors that link our bones to other bones and muscles. Tendons play an important role in our ability to move and carry out various activities in our daily lives.

Types of Tendons

  • Flexor tendons : They enable humans to bend joints and curl their fingers. It is located at the hand-wrist junction. Each finger possesses two flexor tendons—one on the thumb and one on the opposite.
  • Extensor tendons: They facilitate the straightening of joints and the extension of toes. The main tendon, the extensor digitorum longus, and smaller tendons, like the extensor digiti minimi, collectively make up the extensor tendons.
  • Ligamentous tendons: They connect bones to other bones and muscles and deliver stability and support. Ligamentous tendons remain relatively less known despite being the most numerous among connective tissues.
