Difference between Land and Sea Breeze

Difference Between Land and Sea Breeze  : In this article, we shall understand the difference between land and sea breeze . The sun warms the land, water, and sand throughout the day.

In this process, sand gets very hot compared to the water, leading to the land breeze and sea breeze. A breeze is referred to as moderate or mild wind. The wind blowing from the land towards the sea is termed as Land Breeze. The Land breeze blows during the night or early morning. When the wind blows from the sea towards the land, it is called a Sea Breeze. The Sea breeze blows only during the day.

Difference Between Land and Sea Breeze Overview

Land and Sea Breezes are phenomena that are associated with the coastal areas. The land breeze blows out from the land and proceeds towards a water body. The sea breeze, on the contrary, blows towards the land. The land and sea breeze are caused due to the differential heating between water and land surfaces. The land and sea breeze patterns substantially affect the pollution levels and fog distribution in the inland areas. According to the latest research on the land and sea breeze circulation, it has been found to affect the earth's energy requirements. The land and sea breezes also affect the weather conditions on the earth. Land and Sea breezes result in higher humidity levels, temperature moderation in the coastal areas, and high precipitation.

Difference Between Land and Sea Breeze

We all have felt the cool breeze in our surroundings. The breeze is referred to as gentle wind. The breeze is broadly categorized into Land Breeze and Sea Breeze. Both the land and sea breeze occur near the water bodies.

Difference Between Land and Sea Breeze

Sl. No. Parameter Land Breeze Sea Breeze
1 Occurrence Land breeze occurs in the nighttime from land to sea Sea breeze occurs during the daytime from sea to land
2 Temperature Difference The cooling of land is faster than water The Land heats up faster than the water
3 Direction of airflow The air flows from land to sea The air flows from sea to land
4 Speed Land breeze is light and gentle The sea breeze is comparatively strong and more noticeable
5 Time of breeze Land breeze is experienced from late night till early morning The sea breeze is experienced from late morning till afternoon
6 Atmospheric condition There is high pressure on the land and low pressure over the sea There is low pressure on the land and high pressure over the sea
7 Temperature effect The temperatures are cooler near the coast The temperatures are warm near the coast
8 Humidity impact Less humidity on land High humidity on land
Based on the above information, we can conclude that a land breeze is the wind which blows from land towards the sea during the late nights and early morning. On the contrary, the sea breeze is the wind that blows from sea to land during the day. The land breeze is mainly experienced during autumn and winter, whereas the sea breeze is experienced during spring and summer.

What is Land Breeze?

A land breeze is the wind that blows towards the sea. The land breeze blows in the night. The Land breeze is also termed an offshore breeze. The breeze blowing from the land towards the sea creates a pressure gradient between them. This gradient is created because the hot air over the sea has lower pressure than the land air with higher pressure. Let us take up a simple example of sand to understand this concept; when the sand above gets hotter due to the sun's rays. But when we dig further down, the sand gets cooler. This happens due to the pressure gradient created present in it. The Land breeze occurs due to the fast cooling at night. The surroundings warm up very fast, thus allowing the land breeze to move to other parts. This process cools the air present above the sea.

Examples of Land Breeze

The occurrence of a land breeze depends on atmospheric conditions, local geographic situations, and temperature differences. Let us understand a few examples of Land Breeze –
Coastal areas:  Land breeze is commonly experienced along the coastal areas. They are more significant where there is a difference in temperature between the land and the sea.
Island environments:  The islands, bordered by cool sea water, experience frequent land breezes during the nighttime. This happens because the land loses heat faster as compared to water.
Desert areas:  In the deserts, during the daytime, it is very hot, and the temperatures are high. During the night, the temperatures drop significantly; thus, this leads to land breezes because the deserts cool down very fast after sunset.
Large Lakes:  Large lakes also demonstrate land breezes similar to the coastal areas. The cool air from the land moves towards the warm water of the lakes. Flat plains The land breezes develop in the flat plains with a precise temperature between the land and the air above it.

What is Sea Breeze?

Sea Breeze is the breeze that blows during the daytime. The sea breeze blows in the spring as well as the summer season. Sea Breeze is also known as the onshore breeze. The sea breeze blows from the sea towards the land; in this process, a pressure gradient is created between the land and sea. This is because there is a high air pressure over the sea compared to the hot air in the land area. To understand the sea breeze, let us take an example of a ceiling fan. When we switch on the ceiling fan, the hot air present on the ground level moves upwards. This is due to the low-pressure density. The cool air from the ceiling fan comes downwards because of high-pressure density. The formation of sea breeze occurs due to the fast cooling of the sea during the daytime. The cooling of the sea causes the surrounding areas to warm up, thus extending the sea breeze to cool the air above the land.

Examples of Sea Breeze

Sea Breeze prevails in the coastal and water–adjacent environments. Let us check out a few samples of Sea Breeze –
Beach fronts: Coastal areas with sandy beaches always experience sea breeze since the land heats up during the day. This leads to the flow of cool air from the sea.
Island coasts: Some islands are surrounded by water; they experience sea breeze during the daytime. This phenomenon happens because the land gets hotter than the surrounding sea.
Bays and Gulfs:  Since there is a high proximity of water in the bays and gulfs, it enhances the sea breeze.
Mediterranean Climate Regions:  The sea breeze is often experienced in places with a Mediterranean Climate. The sea breeze is experienced during hot, dry summers and mild winters along the coastlines.
Peninsulas The peninsulas are always covered by water from all three sides, thus forming a conducive atmosphere for the sea breeze.

Difference Between Land and Sea Breeze FAQs

Why do land breezes and sea breezes occur?

Land and sea breezes occur due to the difference in the heat absorption and retention capacity of land and water. If the land and water retain the heat at the same pace, then the breeze would not occur.

What is the pace of Land Breeze and Sea Breeze?

The pace of Land Breeze and Sea Breeze is measured in Knots. The land breeze pace ranges from 5 to 8 knots. The sea breeze pace varies from 10 to 20 knots.

Which breeze is dry - land or sea?

The land breeze blows dry winds.

Which type of breeze is beneficial for glider pilots?

The sea breeze is strong enough that the glider pilots use them to steer at higher altitudes.

Why do places near the sea have humid climates?

Cities and places near the sea or coastal areas have humid climates because of the sea breeze. The best example is a city like Mumbai, which always has a humid and hot climate as it is situated near the sea.
