CBSE Class 9 English Moments Notes Chapter 1

CBSE Class 9 English Moments Notes Chapter 1: Chapter 1 of the Moments supplementary reader, "The Lost Child" by Mulk Raj Anand, is an important part of the CBSE Class 9 English syllabus. It revolves around a young boy who gets separated from his parents during a fair, highlighting themes of love, longing, and innocence.

The story teaches the value of parental presence over material desires. According to the exam pattern, questions from this chapter often test comprehension, character understanding, and moral reasoning. Students should focus on key plot points, character behavior, and the central message for better performance in literature sections of the exam.

CBSE Class 9 English Moments Notes Chapter 1 The Lost Child

The Lost Child by Mulk Raj Anand is a touching story about a little boy who goes to a spring fair with his parents. The fair is crowded and full of colorful stalls. The child is excited and asks his parents to buy him a toy, but his father looks at him strictly, and his mother distracts him by pointing to the beautiful mustard field that looked golden in the sun. While chasing dragonflies and playing in nature, he keeps returning to his parents when they call him.

As they reach the fair, the child sees many attractive things. A sweet-seller shouts out the names of delicious sweets like gulab-jamun and jalebi. The boy’s mouth waters, and he asks for sweets, but his parents don’t respond. He sees a flower-seller, a balloon-man, and a snake-charmer. Although he wants everything he sees, he doesn’t ask again because he knows his parents won’t allow him.

Then, he notices a merry-go-round and excitedly runs to ask for a ride—but this time, no one replies. He turns around and realizes he’s alone. His parents are nowhere to be seen. Scared and crying, the boy runs around the fair searching for them. He sobs and calls out for his mother and father.

A kind stranger hears him crying and picks him up gently. The man asks the boy where his parents are, but the child can only cry. The stranger offers to buy him a ride, sweets, balloons, and flowers—things the boy wanted earlier—but now he refuses everything. The only thing he wants is to be with his parents again.

Conclusion of CBSE Class 9 English Moments Notes Chapter 1

The Lost Child beautifully highlights the deep emotional bond between a child and his parents. Though the child is initially attracted to the colorful and tempting things at the fair, he realizes the true value of parental love only when he gets separated from them.

The story conveys that no worldly pleasure can replace the comfort and security parents provide. It also reflects an important part of the CBSE Class 9 English Moments syllabus, where moral lessons are woven into simple narratives. In line with the exam pattern, understanding such messages is crucial for scoring well in literature questions.
