UGC NET Normalization Process 2024

UGC NET Normalization Process 2024 : The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the UGC NET 2024 (Rescheduled) Examination for 83 subjects across multiple cities in India. The examination was held in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode over several dates. The UGC Provisional Answer Key 2024 , along with the Question Paper and Recorded Responses are available on the official NTA website.

The NTA has introduced a normalization procedure to ensure that candidates are not disadvantaged or benefitted due to the difficulty level of the examination. This process is crucial for multi-session papers, where candidates may be given different sets of questions per session. Some candidates may face a relatively tougher set of questions, while others might get easier ones.

To avoid giving any candidate an advantage or disadvantage, NTA uses the UGC NET normalization procedure to equate the scores across sessions. This article outlines the procedure followed by NTA for compiling scores in multi-session papers and explains how percentile-based normalization works.

UGC NET Normalization Score 2024

The UGC NET Normalization Score 2024 is a crucial step in evaluating the performance of candidates. The normalization process helps to adjust the scores of candidates who appeared in different sessions or sets of the exam. This ensures that the scores are comparable and fair. The normalization score is calculated using a formula that considers the mean and standard deviation of the scores of each set. The resulting score is a normalized score, which is used to determine the eligibility of candidates for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship positions.

UGC NET Percentile Scores

The UGC NET Percentile scores are based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. They indicate the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular score. The highest score in each session will have a normalized percentile score of 100, indicating that 100% of candidates have scores equal to or lesser than the highest scorer.

How UGC NET Percentile Score Calculated

The percentile score is calculated using a specific formula to ensure fairness and accuracy in ranking candidates. The formula is: Percentile = 100 × (Number of candidates with equal or lower raw score / Total number of candidates in the session). This method compares a candidate's performance relative to others in the same session. To minimize the occurrence of ties, the percentile scores are rounded off to seven decimal places.

UGC NET Normalization Process 2024 Steps

The UGC NET Normalization process is a step-by-step procedure used to normalize the scores of candidates who have appeared in different sessions, shifts, and subjects. Here are the steps involved in the UGC NET normalization process:

Step 1: Distribution of Examinees in Two Shifts

  • Divide candidates into two sessions randomly, ensuring each session has an approximately equal number of candidates.
  • Assign a unique session ID to each session, e.g., Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2.
  • If there are more days or less shifts, divide candidates accordingly.

Step 2: Preparation of Results for Each Session

  • Calculate the raw scores for each candidate in each session.
  • Calculate the percentile scores of total raw scores for each candidate in each session.
  • The percentile score (TP1) is calculated as follows:

Step 3: Compilation of NTA Score and Preparation of Result

  • Merge the percentile scores for the total raw score from all sessions (Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2).
  • These merged percentile scores will be used as the NTA scores.
  • Use the NTA scores to compile the result and further processing for deciding the allocation.
  • If the percentiles for different shifts are dissimilar/unequal, use the lowest percentile as the eligibility cut-off for that category for all candidates (i.e., all shifts).
  • For example, if the 40% marks correspond to a percentile score of 78 in Shift 1 and 79 in Shift 2, all candidates with a percentile score of 100 to 78 will be eligible in the General Category. Similar method applies to other categories to determine eligibility cut-offs.

UGC NET Normalization Process 2024 FAQs

What is the UGC NET normalization procedure?

The normalization procedure adjusts the scores of candidates across different sessions to ensure fairness.

What is the difference between Percentile Score and percentage of marks?

A percentile score shows how a candidate’s performance compares to others, while a percentage of marks refers to the raw marks obtained.

Why is normalization necessary for multi-session exams?

Since NTA exams are conducted in multiple shifts with different sets of questions, the difficulty levels may vary. Normalization ensures that the candidates’ scores are comparable, creating a level playing field.

How are ties resolved in the UGC NET normalization process?

Percentile scores are calculated up to 7 decimal places to minimize ties among candidates, ensuring accurate rankings.

How are the results compiled after normalization?

After calculating percentile scores for each session, they are merged to form the NTA scores. These NTA scores are then used for preparing the final results and merit lists.
