Sucheta Kripalani was an Indian politician and freedom fighter. She was born on 25 June 1908 in the Ambala district. Her father Mr. Surendranath Majumdar was a medical officer from whom she drew early inspiration. She was educated at Indraprastha College and subsequently pursued her higher studies at the University of Delhi. Before becoming a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, she taught constitutional history until 1939 at Banaras Hindu University . After independence, she was among 15 women who were elected to the Constituent Assembly. Later, in the year 1963, she became chief minister of the United Provinces , which is currently known as Uttar Pradesh.

Sucheta Kripalani was among the few women who were elected in 1946 as members of the new Indian Constituent Assembly formed to draft the Constitution of India. Following this, she broke the barrier for women in politics by contesting the Lok Sabha election in 1952. Since then, Sucheta remained an active participant in politics. As a member of the United Provinces Legislative Assembly, she went on to serve as a minister from 1960 to 1963. Finally, on October 2, 1963, she set a milestone for women in political leadership by becoming the 4th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (United Provinces) and the first woman Chief Minister.
