Class 11 is an important stage in a student's academic journey, especially for those planning to pursue higher education in mathematics, commerce, engineering, computer applications, or other related fields. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics is designed to build conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

For students studying Mathematics as part of their Commerce subject combination, understanding the syllabus and assessment structure can help them plan their preparation effectively. The latest CBSE curriculum for the 2026-27 academic session covers five major units: Sets and Functions, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics and Probability. The theory paper carries 80 marks, while Internal Assessment carries 20 marks.

Class 11 Maths 2026-27

The Class 11 Maths syllabus 2026-27 builds a foundation for higher-level mathematical concepts. It covers topics such as sets, relations and functions, trigonometric functions, complex numbers, quadratic equations, permutations and combinations, coordinate geometry, limits and derivatives, statistics, and probability.

The CBSE curriculum is structured to encourage students to understand mathematical concepts and apply them to solve problems. Students should therefore focus on conceptual clarity and regular practice instead of relying only on memorisation.

For Commerce Class 11 students, Mathematics can also support logical and quantitative skills that are useful in higher studies and several career-oriented courses.

CBSE Class 11 Maths Syllabus – Unit-wise Topics

Unit I: Sets and Functions

This unit carries 23 marks and covers Sets, Relations and Functions, and Trigonometric Functions.

Sets:
Students learn about different types and representations of sets, subsets, intervals, universal sets, Venn diagrams, union, intersection, difference, complement, and properties of complement.

Relations and Functions:
This section covers ordered pairs, Cartesian products, relations, domain, co-domain, range, functions, real-valued functions, graphs, and operations on functions.

Trigonometric Functions:
Topics include positive and negative angles, measurement of angles in radians and degrees, trigonometric functions using the unit circle, signs, domains and ranges, graphs, and identities involving trigonometric functions.

Unit II: Algebra

Algebra carries the highest unit-wise weightage of 25 marks.

The major topics include:

  • Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations

  • Linear Inequalities

  • Permutations and Combinations

  • Binomial Theorem

  • Sequence and Series

Students will study complex numbers and their algebraic properties, the Argand plane, quadratic equations, inequalities, counting principles, permutations and combinations, binomial expansion, arithmetic progression, geometric progression, and related concepts.

Unit III: Coordinate Geometry

This unit carries 12 marks and covers:

  • Straight Lines

  • Conic Sections

  • Introduction to Three-Dimensional Geometry

Students learn about slopes and equations of lines, distances, conic sections such as circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas, along with the basic concepts of three-dimensional coordinate geometry.

Unit IV: Calculus

Calculus carries 8 marks and includes Limits and Derivatives.

The syllabus introduces the intuitive concept of limits and derivatives, including derivatives as rates of change and geometrically through the tangent to a curve. Students also study limits of polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions.

Unit V: Statistics and Probability

This unit carries 12 marks and includes:

Statistics: Measures of dispersion, including range, mean deviation, variance, and standard deviation of ungrouped and grouped data.

Probability: Events, occurrence of events, 'not', 'and' and 'or' events, exhaustive events, mutually exclusive events, and axiomatic probability.

Class 11 Maths 2026-27 Formative-Only Topics

The CBSE 2026-27 curriculum identifies certain topics that are included for learning but are assessed only formatively and do not add to summative assessment. These include selected concepts such as practical problems on union and intersection, composition of functions, general solutions of certain trigonometric equations, mathematical induction, polar representation of complex numbers, graphical solutions of linear inequalities in two variables, general and middle terms in binomial expansion, selected special sums, the normal form of a line, section formula in three-dimensional geometry, the chain rule, and random experiments/sample-space representation.

Students should still study these topics as part of classroom learning, but should understand their assessment status under the 2026-27 curriculum.

Tips to Score Well in Class 11 Maths

Here are some preparation tips for students appearing for the Class 11 Maths annual examination 2027:

Understand the concepts:
Mathematics builds from one concept to another. Understand definitions, formulas, theorems, and their applications before moving to complex problems.

Practice regularly:
Set aside time every day for solving mathematical problems. Regular practice can improve calculation speed, accuracy, and confidence.

Follow the complete syllabus:
Since CBSE does not provide chapter-wise weightage, do not skip chapters based only on expected marks. Prepare all five units systematically.

Solve NCERT questions:
Use the NCERT Mathematics textbook as the primary study resource and solve its examples and exercises carefully.

Maintain a formula sheet:
Keep important formulas, identities, and results in one place for quick revision before tests and examinations.

Solve sample and previous papers:
Practice different question types to understand how concepts are applied and to improve time management.

Work on weak topics:
Maintain a list of difficult chapters and revisit them regularly instead of postponing them until the examination.

Manage your time:
During the examination, read the paper carefully, start with questions you are confident about, and keep sufficient time for checking calculations.

Following these strategies consistently can help students build a strong foundation and perform better in the Class 11 Maths 2027 examination.
