Pollen Pistil Interaction, Definition, Events, and MCQs for NEET

Pollen pistil interaction  is a crucial process in sexual reproduction in flowering plants. This biological phenomenon ensures that the pollen from the male part of a flower (anther) successfully fertilizes the ovules in the female part of a flower (pistil). This interaction is essential for the formation of seeds, which eventually grow into new plants.

Understanding this topic is vital for the NEET Exam , as it is an important part of the biology syllabus. The concept highlights the intricacies of plant reproduction and helps students learn about the mechanisms of compatibility, pollination , and fertilization in plants.

Definition of Pollen Pistil Interaction

Pollen-pistil interaction refers to the series of events that occur between the pollen grain and the pistil during fertilization in flowering plants. It is a highly selective process where the pistil identifies compatible pollen for successful fertilization. This ensures that only the right pollen type germinates and produces a pollen tube that delivers male gametes to the ovule.

Events in Pollen Pistil Interaction

The process of pollen-pistil interaction can be divided into the following steps:

Recognition of Compatible Pollen

The first step in the pollen-pistil interaction is the recognition of pollen type by the pistil. This recognition is facilitated by chemical signals exchanged between the pollen grain and the pistil.
  • Compatible Pollen: If the pollen is of the right type (genetically and species-specific), the pistil accepts it and promotes subsequent processes like pollen germination and pollen tube growth, ultimately leading to fertilization.
  • Incompatible Pollen : If the pollen is of the wrong type, the pistil rejects it by either preventing its germination on the stigma or halting the growth of the pollen tube in the style. This selective process ensures reproductive success and prevents wastage of resources.

Germination of Pollen Grains

Once the pistil identifies compatible pollen, the pollen grain germinates on the stigma.
  • Germination Process: The pollen grain produces a pollen tube through one of its germ pores. The contents of the pollen grain , including the vegetative nucleus and generative cell, move into the growing pollen tube.
  • Pollen Tube Growth : The pollen tube penetrates the tissues of the stigma and style, guided by chemical signals, and grows towards the ovary, forming a pathway for the male gametes.

Development of Male Gametes

During pollen tube growth, the male gametes develop within the pollen tube.
  • Two-Celled Pollen Grains : In plants that shed pollen in a two-celled condition (containing a vegetative cell and a generative cell), the generative cell divides while the pollen tube grows, forming two male gametes.
  • Three-Celled Pollen Grains: In plants where pollen is shed in a three-celled condition, the pollen tube carries two fully-formed male gametes from the start.

Entry of Pollen Tube into the Embryo Sac

The pollen tube, after reaching the ovary, enters the ovule through a small opening called the micropyle.
  • Guidance by Filiform Apparatus: The filiform apparatus, located in the micropylar part of the synergids, directs the pollen tube towards the embryo sac.
  • Release of Male Gametes : Upon entering the embryo sac, the vegetative nucleus of the pollen tube degenerates. The tip of the pollen tube swells and bursts due to endosmosis, releasing its contents, including the two male gametes, into a degenerating synergid. This ensures the delivery of male gametes for fertilization.

Pollen Pistil Interaction FAQs

Q. What is the pollen-pistil interaction and self-incompatibility?

Ans. Pollen-pistil interaction involves the recognition and acceptance or rejection of pollen by the stigma to ensure fertilization. Self-incompatibility prevents self-pollen from fertilizing the ovules, encouraging genetic diversity.

Q. What are the two outbreeding devices?

Ans. Dicliny (unisexual flowers) and dichogamy are two outbreeding devices. Dicliny separates male and female flowers, while dichogamy ensures stamens and carpels mature at different times.

Q. What are three ways pollen can be transferred to the pistil?

Ans. Pollen can be transferred to the pistil by wind, insects, or water, depending on the plant’s pollination mechanism.

Q. What is the path of the pollen tube in the pistil?

Ans. The pollen tube grows from the stigma, travels through the style, and reaches the ovule in the ovary for fertilization.

Q. What is the pollen-pistil interaction?

Ans. It is the process where the pollen and pistil interact to enable fertilization, involving pollen recognition, germination, and tube growth.
