UPSC Bengali Optional is a language and literature-based subject that combines the study of the Bengali language structure with its rich literary tradition. It explores the evolution of Bangla from its historical roots to its modern form while covering important literary movements, cultural influences, and renowned writers such as Bankimchandra Chatterjee and Rabindranath Tagore.
The UPSC Bengali Optional Syllabus 2026 is divided into two papers. Paper I focuses on language history, structure, grammar, and literary evolution, while Paper II is text-based and covers prescribed literary works from the classical to the modern period. Together, both papers test understanding of language as well as interpretation of literature in a historical and cultural context.
