The National Institute of Design (NID) has announced the 2027-28 admission cycle for B.Des and the 5.5-year Professional Education Master of Design (Integrated Pathway) programmes. The online application process begins on 10 September 2026, with the last date to apply being 30 November 2026.
The selection process includes DAT Prelims followed by DAT Mains for shortlisted candidates. You can check the eligibility requirements, available programmes, important dates, fees, application steps, and admission stages before applying.

The application must be submitted within the prescribed deadline. Failure to submit it on time will make you ineligible for seat allotment and admission across the participating NIDs.

The 5.5-year Professional Education M.Des (Integrated Pathway) is offered at NID Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Gandhinagar. B.Des and 5.5-year Integrated M.Des programmes are also listed for NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Assam, NID Haryana, and NID Madhya Pradesh.

The eligibility criteria, age limit, and applicable examination rules are common across the participating NIDs.
The NID 2027 eligibility requirements include age and educational qualifications. You need to fulfil both conditions to apply.
The age requirement varies by category:
General and General-EWS: Born on or after 1 July 2006
OBC-NCL, SC and ST: Born on or after 1 July 2003
PwD Reserved Category: Born on or after 1 July 2001
Overseas Supernumerary Category: Born on or after 1 July 2006
You can apply if you have passed or are appearing for the higher secondary or 10+2 qualifying examination in the academic year 2026-27.
Students from any stream can apply, including:
Science
Arts
Commerce
Humanities
Other equivalent streams
The qualifying examination must be conducted by a recognised board such as CBSE, IB, ICSE, or an equivalent board.
The nid bdes eligibility 2027 requirements also cover candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in the academic year 2027-28, subject to NID's conditions.
Such candidates must:
Appear for the qualifying examination before physical verification of documents.
Pass the examination in the first attempt.
Submit the qualifying examination marksheet by 15 July 2027.
If these conditions are not met, the admission will be cancelled.
NID also accepts certain qualifications equivalent to the 10+2 system. These include:
Senior Secondary School examination under NIOS with at least five subjects
Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination recognised by AIU
H.S.C. vocational examination
GCE Advanced Level examination taken in London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka
AICTE-approved three-year full-time diploma after Class 10
If you have completed or are appearing for Class 12 outside India or from a board not specified in the admission requirements, you must provide an equivalence certificate from AIU, New Delhi, or the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
If your Class 12 result has not been declared during physical verification, your admission may be provisional.
In this situation:
You need to submit the required undertaking.
You must submit the qualifying examination marksheet by 15 July 2027.
Failure to submit the marksheet within the deadline will lead to cancellation of provisional admission.
Candidates who have not appeared for their Class 12 examination before physical verification will not be eligible for further admission stages.
The application process is conducted online. You need to submit one application for both DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. Candidates are shortlisted for DAT Mains based on their performance in DAT Prelims.
First, register on the NID admissions portal.
During registration, you need to:
Select the required programme.
Enter your personal details.
Provide your registered email ID and mobile number.
Complete the required verification process.
Use the login credentials sent to your registered email address.

During the edit window, you can modify permitted details. However, the programme, name, date of birth, registered email ID, and registered mobile number cannot be changed.
If you change your category during the edit window, you must pay the applicable additional fee. Any excess fee paid because of a category change will not be refunded.
You need to upload your photograph and signature according to the prescribed specifications.

The application fee for Indian candidates is:
General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL: ₹3,000
Female candidates, except SC, ST and PwD: ₹2,000
SC and ST: ₹1,500
PwD: ₹500

The fee is applicable to all NIDs. It is non-refundable and non-transferable. Bank transaction charges or convenience fees, if applicable, are additional.
After successful payment, your application will be accepted. You should save or print the completed application form for future reference.
The NID Design admission 2027 process is conducted through the Design Aptitude Test (DAT). It has two stages:
DAT Prelims is the first stage of the admission process.
Key points include:
It is common for all participating NIDs.
It is conducted at test centres across India.
It is a paper-and-pencil/pen test.
Questions may include text and visuals.
The question paper is in English.

NID may add or remove test centres. You need to arrange your own travel and accommodation for DAT Prelims.
Candidates are shortlisted for DAT Mains based on merit in DAT Prelims and the applicable tie-break policy.
DAT Mains consists of two parts:
Studio Sensitivity Test
In-Person Sensitivity Test
For each category, the number of candidates shortlisted for DAT Mains will be 2.5 times the available seats.
The DAT Prelims score is used only for shortlisting and is not carried forward as weightage to the DAT Mains stage. The DAT Mains score is used for admission to the respective NID.
After the DAT Mains result, eligible candidates must submit a separate online admission application within the prescribed timeline.
This application is mandatory for participation in the seat allotment process.
Final seat allotment is based on:
Merit order
Availability of seats in the respective category
Preference submitted by the candidate
