The Cabinet Committee approved a 3% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for Central Government Teachers (KVS) and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners with effect from January 1, 2022. The DA increase was announced to compensate for the rise in prices. As a result of the increase, the DA for Central Government Teachers is now 34%. The 7th Pay Commission stipulates that Housing Rent Allowance (HRA) will be revised when DA increases.
Dearness allowance is calculated based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (Base Year 2001=100), released by the Labour Bureau every month. To calculate DA, the 12-monthly average of the index is subtracted from 261.42 and then divided by 261.42 and multiplied by 100. In other words, the DA percentage is calculated as follows:
DA Percentage = (12 Monthly Average - 261.42) / 261.42 x 100
