Factors Affecting CLAT 2025 Cut-Offs

The following factors collectively determine the minimum marks and ranks required for admission to various NLUs through CLAT 2025.

  • Exam Difficulty Level: A tougher CLAT exam generally results in lower cut-offs, while an easier paper pushes cut-offs higher.
  • Number of Applicants: Increased competition from more candidates leads to higher cut-off marks. As per the statistics, around  58504 candidates appeared in CLAT UG and 10282 candidates appeared for CLAT PG in 2024.
  • Seat Availability: Fewer seats at NLUs mean higher cut-offs due to increased competition for limited spots. For example, NLSIU Bengaluru now offers around 300 seats for UG courses, higher than what was offered last year. This has led to higher cutoffs for the institute.
  • CLAT NLU Preferences: Candidates get admission to NLUs as per their preference. Most popular NLUs include NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad, and NUJS Kolkata. These NLUs tend to have higher cut-offs compared to mid- and lower-tier institutions. Candidates' choices during counselling directly influence the opening and closing ranks for each NLU.
  • Reservation Policies: Category-wise reservations (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD) result in different cut-offs for each group, with reserved categories typically having lower cut-offs.

CLAT 2025 Exam Analysis

CLAT 2025 maintained the same exam pattern as last year, featuring 120 questions across five sections and was conducted in a single shift on 1 December 2024. As per the students’ feedback, the overall difficulty level was easy to moderate.  Sections like English and Quantitative Techniques were considered accessible and scoring, while Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning included some moderate and analytical questions. This trend suggests that cut-offs for top NLUs may rise, reflecting the competitive nature and high performance of candidates this year. The following table gives insights into the topics and difficulty level of each section in CLAT 2025.

CLAT Ranks vs Marks Analysis 2025

CLAT 2025 ranks and marks share a dynamic relationship, with higher scores translating to better ranks and improved chances at top NLUs. For example, a score of 100+ places a candidate in the top 50, while 80+ marks may secure a rank within the top 1,000, and 70 marks are expected to correspond to a rank around 3,500. This correlation is influenced by factors such as exam difficulty, the number of test-takers, and overall performance trends, making it crucial for aspirants to understand where their scores position them in the national merit list. The revised CLAT 2025 results, following the Supreme Court's intervention, have further impacted rank shifts, especially for those near key NLU cut-offs.
