IELTS Speaking Part 2: The "long turn” test or the IELTS Speaking Part 2 test is an important part of the IELTS speaking exam . In this section, candidates are given various cue cards on different topics. Candidates will be required to speak for 1-2 minutes on the given topic, however, all test-takers will be provided a one-minute preparation period for any topic. These cue cards are included in the IELTS Speaking Part 2 part to examine the ability of test-takers to organize ideas, express thoughts clearly, and use a wide range of vocabulary.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample Practice Questions with Answers

Question:  Describe a festival celebrated in your country.

Answer:  A popular festival celebrated in my country is Durga Puja. This is the main festival of the Bengali community. It is celebrated in numerous cities in India during the month of October and November. During this festival, people buy new clothes, decorate their homes, and visit puja pandals to celebrate the homecoming of Maa Durga.

Question:  Describe someone you admire.

Answer:  One person I greatly admire is my grandfather. He is a retired teacher who dedicated his life to educating underprivileged children. His patience, kindness, and wisdom are qualities that inspire me. I admire his ability to remain calm under pressure and offer guidance to others. He has influenced me to value education and contribute to society by helping others whenever I can.

Question:  Describe a trip you enjoyed.

Answer:  Last summer, I visited Manali, a beautiful hill station in India. I went hiking, explored local markets, and tried paragliding for the first time. The breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountains and the sense of adventure made it unforgettable. It was my first solo trip, and it taught me to be more independent and confident in unfamiliar situations.

Question:  Talk about something you recently bought and are happy with.

Answer:  I recently purchased a pair of noise-canceling headphones. I bought them because I often work in noisy environments and need to concentrate. The sound quality is excellent, and they block out distractions completely. This purchase has significantly improved my productivity and made listening to music a more enjoyable experience.

Question:  Describe a skill you have learned recently.

Answer:  Recently, I learned how to bake bread. I followed online tutorials and practiced several times until I mastered it. I decided to learn baking because I wanted to explore a creative hobby during my weekends. Now, I can make fresh, delicious bread at home, which has become a favorite pastime and a way to unwind.

Q. How long should I speak in IELTS Speaking Part 2?

Ans. Candidates should ideally speak for 1-2 minutes until the examiner asks them to stop.

Q. Can I ask the examiner to repeat the task card instructions?

Ans. Yes, you can ask the examiner to repeat the task card instructions if needed. However, the request should be polite and formal.

Q. What happens if I finish speaking before 1 minute?

Ans. In case the candidates finish speaking before 1 minute, the examiner might ask them to elaborate their answers promptly.

Q. Is it okay to make mistakes while speaking?

Ans. In IELTS Speaking Part 2, some minor mistakes are generally accepted by the interviewer as long as the communication is not affected. However, students should focus on developing their fluency and clarity to neglect minor mistakes.
