Types of IELTS Writing Task 1 Questions: The IELTS Writing Task 1 has 8 main types of questions. These are Line Graphs, Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Tables, Processes, Maps, Combination Charts, and Developments. In IELTS Writing Task 1, candidates are required to describe, summarize, or explain visual information using their own words. Line Graphs

IELTS Writing Task 1 Line graphs usually show changes over time and may include one or several lines, each representing different data sets. You’re expected to summarize trends, highlight fluctuations, and compare data points.

Sample Question: The line graph illustrates the consumption of three types of spreads - margarine, low-fat and reduced spreads, and butter - in a country between 1981 and 2007. Summarize the key features of the information shown, selecting and reporting the main features, and making comparisons where relevant.

Bar Charts

IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar charts (vertical or horizontal) present categorical data. These might compare information across years, locations, or other variables. Some charts show just one set of data, while others may present multiple comparisons.

Sample Question: The bar chart below shows the number of visitors to two different museums in a city over a six-month period. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Pie Charts

IELTS Writing Task 1 Pie charts represent data as parts of a whole and are less common but still appear in Task 1. You’ll need to interpret percentages and compare different segments effectively.

Sample Question: The pie chart below shows the percentage of ad spending by different kinds of media in India from 2012 to 20 2017. Explain the pie chart.

Tables

IELTS Writing Task 1 Tables display raw data in rows and columns. Like graphs, they require comparison and description of trends or patterns.

Sample Question: The table depicts the percentage of national consumer spending on food/drinks/tobacco, clothing/footwear, and leisure/education in five different nations in 2002. Summarise the data by selecting and reporting the most important elements, and making comparisons where appropriate.

Processes

IELTS Writing Task 1 Process diagrams show how something works or is produced, such as manufacturing steps or natural cycles. These typically require the use of the passive voice and present tense unless a time period is mentioned.

Sample Question: Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Maps

Maps may illustrate geographical changes over time in towns, buildings, or areas. They require you to describe alterations in layout, land use, or infrastructure development.

Sample Question: The maps below show the layout of a town in 1990 and the same town at present. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Combination Charts

The combination charts include two different visuals combined. These combinations may include a combination of bar charts, pie charts, graphs, or others. These questions test your ability to synthesize information from multiple sources. 

Sample Question: Summarise the data by selecting and reporting the most important elements, and making comparisons where appropriate.

Developments

This rare question type may involve describing an evolution or change over time, such as technological advancements or species development. It blends elements of both process and map questions.

Sample Question: The diagrams below show the changes that have taken place in the town of Willowbridge between 2000 and 2020. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
