CBSE Class 12 Chemistry Notes Chapter 11 FAQs

What are phenols, and how are they different from alcohols?

Phenols are compounds where the hydroxyl (-OH) group is directly attached to a benzene ring. Unlike alcohols, where the -OH group is attached to a saturated carbon, phenols have an -OH group connected to an aromatic ring, which affects their chemical properties and reactivity.

How are ethers different from alcohols and phenols?

Ethers have an oxygen atom bonded to two alkyl or aryl groups (R-O-R'). They do not have hydroxyl groups and are generally less reactive than alcohols and phenols. Ethers are used mainly as solvents and in anesthesia.

Why are alcohols and phenols soluble in water?

Both alcohols and phenols are soluble in water due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between their -OH groups and water molecules. However, solubility decreases as the size of the hydrophobic group increases.

What are the physical properties of ethers?

Ethers generally have: - Lower boiling points compared to alcohols of similar molecular weight because they cannot form hydrogen bonds. - Good miscibility with water due to their ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules.
