Chandra Shekhar Azad’s Revolutionary Journey

Chandra Shekhar Azad was a very popular freedom fighter and Indian revolutionary who fought against the oppressive British regime with arms. He was also known for his unwavering resolve to free India from foreign rule and exceptional bravery.

  • He had joined Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921, at a very young age of 15.

  • After the suspension of the Non-Cooperation by Mahatma Gandhi in 1922, Azad joined the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).

  • Azad’s approach to India’s freedom movement against the British was different from other leaders of that time. He was of the view that only armed resistance could overthrow the foreign rulers from India.

  • He played an important role in giving a new direction to the revolutionary activities during the freedom struggle. In this view, he also reorganized the HRA to HSRA to overthrow the British rule in India and establish a socialist republic in its place by creating a huge movement consisting of workers, peasants, and students against the British.


Chandra Shekhar Azad's Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

Chandra Shekhar Azad was the face of the armed revolutionary activities against British rule. His strategic acumen was very useful in the execution of some of the important revolutionary activities of his time. He believed in armed resistance to overthrow the foreign and lived by it.

  • He also played a prominent role in some of the most daring revolutionary activities during the freedom struggle, including the Kakori train robbery in 1926, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy Lord Irwin’s train in 1926, and the shooting of British official Saunders in 1929 at Lahore.

  • Azad was always on the run from the British and became a symbol of resistance for the younger masses of that time.

  • He died on February 27, 1931, at Alfred Park in Allahabad, after a fierce encounter with the British police. When left with only the option of capture, he chose to end his life on his terms, and thus, the Britishers were never able to capture him alive.
