The Asian Productivity organization is a union of 21 Asian countries which also includes India as a member. The aim of this organization is to promote social-economic development in the Asian region. 

The headquarter of APO is currently located in Japan (Tokyo). The APO is created as a nonprofit, nonpolitical and nondiscriminatory organization. It was established in 1996. The website of APO hosts workshops for the members.

What is the work of APO?

The primary work of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) is the social-economic development of Asian and Pacific regions. The organization mainly aims to increase the productivity in both social and economical factors of the members. 

The research conducted by the organization helps in sustainable green development in the region. They also encourage the members to share the information among themselves to increase productivity. APO works as a catalyst and functions as a think tank by conducting research to know the needs of its members. 

The multi-alliance of APO collaborates together for promoting the needs of the country. The advisor of the organization helps to create a strategy and increase productivity in development. They also train and provide consultancy services to the public as well as the private sector. The stakeholders of this organization can access all the services provided by them.

The Asian Productivity Organization is led and governed by the secretary-general. The councils are divided into three departments -

  • The Administration and finance department
  • The Research and Planning department
  • The Industry and agriculture department  

History of APO 

The APO was established on 11th May 1959 as a regional inter-governmental organization comprising several member countries from Asia and the Pacific. The first round of tables was held in Tokyo, Japan. It was formally established in 1961 with eight founding members Republic of China, India, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand. 

Later in 1963 and 1965, Hong Kong and the Republic of Vietnam also joined and Ceylon in 1966, Indonesia in 1968, Singapore in 1969, Bangladesh in 1982, Malaysia in 1983, Fiji in 1984, Mongolia in 1992, Vietnam in 1996, Lao PDR in 2002, and Cambodia in 2004 also joined as members. Now it has a total of 21 members in the group. 

Initiative by APO

The Asian Productivity Organization took lots of initiative for the development of its members. They have hosted many workshops for training in agriculture with the help of technology. The workshops result in the productivity of Asian countries. The workshops also include agricultural transformation, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).
