Structure and Functions OF Cell

The vast variety of organisms that are present around you (whether plants or animals) differ in shape, size, and appearance. But, all these organisms carry out several functions which are same like nutrition, respiration, growth, and reproduction. For instance, in plants leaves perform the function of synthesis of food (nutrition), while in animals, the mouth is involved in the intake of food (part of nutrition). Though in shape and size, leaves and mouths in different plants and animals may be different, they carry out the same function in plants and animals respectively.

To perform the different functions, each living organism has many organs. For example in plants, roots (help in absorption of water and minerals), stem (helps in conduction of water and minerals), and leaves (help in the synthesis of food or photosynthesis) are different organs performing different functions. Similarly in animals, the stomach (meant for digestion); Kidney (excretion), and lungs (breathing) are some of the organs.

Each organ is further made up of smaller parts called tissues. A tissue is a group of cells performing a specific function So, ultimately cell which makes up the tissue is the basic structural unit of all living organisms.
