The Wave Equation

Wave Motion of Class 11

The Wave Equation

Travelling waves satisfy a differential equation called the linear wave equation.

The Wave Equation (14.15)

where v = ω/ k.

This equation is satisfied by any traveling wave of the form

y = f(x ± vt)

For mechanical waves, the wave equation arises when Newton’s Second Law is applied to the motion of an element of the medium through which a wave propagates.
