In mathematics, factorisation or factoring is defined as breaking or decomposition of an entity (for example, number, matrix, or polynomial) into another product, or common factors, which gives an original number or matrix when repeated together, etc. You will learn this lesson in your lower classes from 6 to 8.

Q1. Find the H.C.F. of
Solution:
1. H.C.F. of 6ab2 and 9a2b2
= (H.C.F of 6 and 9) x (H.C.F. of ab2 and a2b2)
2. H.C.F. of 15x2 y3 z4 ,20x3 y4z5 and 25x4 y5z6
= (H.C.F of 15, 20 and 25) x (x2 y3z4, x3 y4z5 and x4 y5z6 )
= 5x2 y3z4
Q2. Find the H.C.F. of
Solution:
1. H.C.F. of 6ab2 and 9a2b2
= (H.C.F of 6 and 9) x (H.C.F. of ab2 and a2b2)
= 3 ab2
2. H.C.F. of 15x2 y3 z4 ,20x3 y4z5 and 25x4 y5z6
= 5x2 y3z4
Q3. Factorise:
Solution:
1. H.C.F. of 4x2 y and 12y is 4y
So, 4y is a common factor of each term.
4x2 y + 12y = 4y(x2 + 3)
2. H.C.F. of 3a2b, 6ab and 24a is 3a
3a2b - 6ab -24a = 3a(ab + 2b - 8)
3. H.C.F. of 36a3b and 60a2bc is 12a2b
36a3b - 60a2bc = 12a2b(3a - 5c)
4. H.C.F. of 6xy2,9x2 y and 24xy is 3xy
6xy2 + 9x2 y - 24xy = 3xy(2y + 3x - 8)
Q4. Factorise:
Solution:
1. 4x(a + 3b) - 7 y(a + 3b) = (a + 3b) (4x - 7y)
2. a(a3 + 2) - 2(a3 + 2) = (a3 + 2)(a - 2)
3. 9(x + 2y)3 + 6(x + 2y)2 = 3(x + 2y)2 [3(x + 2 y) + 2]
= 3(x + 2y)2 (3x +6y + 2 )
4. a(a - b)3 + 3a2b(a - b) = a(a - b) [(a - b)2 + 3ab]
= a(a - b)(a2 - 2ab + b2 + 3ab)
= a(a - b)(a2 + ab + b2)
