WBC

The full form of WBC is White Blood Cells. White blood cells, also known as leukocytes, are the primary defense mechanism of the human body against disease and infection. They play a crucial role in the immune system by identifying and neutralizing harmful pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and circulate throughout the body in the bloodstream. There are five types of white blood cells, each with a specific function such as engulfing and destroying invading organisms, producing antibodies, or alerting other cells of an invading threat.

Types Of WBC

There are several types of WBCs present in the human body, including:

Types of WBC Function
Neutrophils These are the most abundant type of WBC and play a crucial role in fighting infections. They engulf and destroy bacteria and other harmful invaders in the body.
Lymphocytes Lymphocytes are responsible for the production of antibodies and play a crucial role in the body’s immune response. There are two types of lymphocytes- B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies while T cells help to identify and destroy infected cells.
Monocytes Monocytes are responsible for cleaning up dead or damaged cells and tissues. They also play a role in fighting chronic infections and removing foreign substances from the body.
Eosinophils These cells play a role in the body’s defense against parasites and in controlling allergies. They release chemicals that help to destroy harmful invaders and prevent inflammation.
Basophils Basophils play a role in the body’s response to allergies and help to control the severity of an allergic reaction. They release histamine, a chemical that helps to dilate blood vessels and trigger an immune response.

Significance of WBC

White Blood Cells (WBC) play a crucial role in the human body by defending against infections and foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. They are an essential part of the immune system and help to identify and eliminate harmful substances.

An increased WBC count can indicate an infection or inflammation, while a decreased count may suggest a weakened immune system. It is important to maintain normal WBC levels for overall health and well-being.

Count Test for WBC

A WBC count test is a simple blood test that measures the number of white blood cells in a sample of blood. This test is usually ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of an infection or has a history of chronic illness.

The significance of the WBC count test is that it can help to diagnose and monitor a wide range of medical conditions.

For example, if the WBC count is low, it may indicate a condition such as leukemia or bone marrow failure. On the other hand, if the WBC count is high, it may indicate an infection or inflammation in the body.

Functions of WBC

The three functions of WBC are:

  1. Protection against infection: White blood cells play a critical role in defending the body against infections and harmful substances by identifying and attacking foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
  2. Immune response: White blood cells also participate in the immune response by producing antibodies, which help to neutralize harmful substances and mark them for destruction.
  3. Inflammatory response: White blood cells also play a role in the body's inflammatory response, which helps to control inflammation and promote healing. They release chemicals that help to stimulate blood flow, recruit other immune cells, and promote the removal of dead cells and debris.

Conclusion

In conclusion, White Blood Cells (WBC) are an essential component of the immune system that play a vital role in protecting the body against infections and diseases.

The WBC count test is an important diagnostic tool that can help to identify and monitor a wide range of medical conditions. It is important to maintain healthy WBC levels to keep your immune system strong and protect your body from illnesses.

What are the 3 functions of WBC?

The 3 functions of WBC are - protection against infection, immune response and inflammatory response.

What is the normal count of WBC?

The normal count of white blood cells (WBC) in a healthy person is typically between 4,500 and 11,000 cells per microliter (mcL) of blood. However, the normal range may vary slightly based on age, gender, and overall health.
