NEET PG Exam Date and Background

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG 2024) is scheduled for August 11. The exam, managed by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), was initially postponed and has seen significant changes, including last-minute revisions to exam centers and patterns. These changes have caused considerable distress among candidates.

Shashi Tharoor's Concerns

Shashi Tharoor has highlighted the undue stress caused by the last-minute changes, noting that some students must travel up to 800-1000 kilometers to reach their allocated centers. He has also pointed out the difficulties related to obtaining travel tickets and the added challenges posed by recent landslides in Kerala. Tharoor has called for the exam to be conducted in a fair manner and has requested a meeting with the concerned MPs from Kerala to address these issues.

Request for More Exam Centers

Tharoor's letter emphasizes the need for more exam centers in each state to accommodate students closer to their residences or educational institutions. He argues that a national exam should ideally be conducted in a single shift across all locations to ensure uniformity and fairness, criticizing the decision to split the exam into two shifts.

Response from NBEMS

Dr. Abhijat Sheth, President of NBEMS, defended the current arrangements, stating that the decision to avoid private centers and use TCS iON and AICTE-affiliated institutes was made to ensure better supervision and reduce malpractice. The exam will be held in two shifts, and the scores will be normalized. NBEMS has aimed to assign centers within the same state as per the candidates' addresses.

Supreme Court Review

Amid these concerns, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea seeking the postponement of NEET PG 2024. The petition claims that the allocated centers are inconvenient and that the normalization of scores is necessary. The Court will review the matter with Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud leading the proceedings.

Plea Rejected by Supreme Court on Aug 9, 2024

On August 9, the Supreme Court denied a request to postpone the NEET PG 2024. The petitioners raised concerns about travel arrangements to their designated exam centers and also requested that the normalization formula used for the four sets of question papers be disclosed to candidates, aiming to prevent any potential arbitrariness in the process.
The Supreme Court stated in its ruling that it would not jeopardize the futures of over 200,000 students. It emphasized that the interests of a few petitioners could not outweigh the broader concerns of the majority of students and their families.
