List of NLUs in India, Courses, Seats, Rankings, Fees and Accreditations
List of NLUs in India: India saw a major transformation in legal education with the establishment of National Law Universities (NLUs), beginning with the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1987. This trend continued with the founding of NALSAR in Hyderabad in 1998, marking a new era in legal academia. Following the model of esteemed institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Law Universities (NLUs) have emerged as centers of excellence regulated by state statutes.
Typically, the Chancellor of these NLUs is the Chief Justice of the High Court. However, there are exceptions like RMLNLU in Lucknow and Dr. B R Ambedkar National Law University in Rai, Haryana, where the Chancellorship is held by the Chief Minister and Governor, respectively.Today, India has 26 NLUs, with 24 admitting students through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi), stands out by conducting its own admission test, the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).The establishment of NLUs has transformed legal education by implementing uniform and inclusive admission procedures, ensuring aspiring legal scholars from across the nation have equal opportunities to pursue their aspirations.

What Does NLU stands for?

NLU stands for National Law University. These universities were created to raise the standard of legal education in India to match global levels, similar to how IIMs and IITs are for management and engineering. Established under state legislations and recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI), NLUs are single-discipline universities that provide integrated honors and law degrees. There are currently 26 NLUs in India.

Most Common Myths about CLAT And NLUs

What are the Entrance Exams for NLUs?

There are two main entrance exams for admission to National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. The first is the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET), conducted by National Law University Delhi. AILET is specifically for NLU Delhi and covers BA LLB, LLM, and PhD programs. The exam is conducted offline across the country, typically in December, with applications released around August. Classes usually start in early August. The second exam is the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities. CLAT is a common entrance exam for 26 NLUs, except NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya, which have separate exams. CLAT is also conducted offline, generally in the first or second week of December, with applications available from July. Most NLUs begin classes in the first week of August.

AILET and CLAT Exam Comparison

AILET and CLAT are two entrance exams for NLUs that have similarities and differences. CLAT focuses on testing reading and critical thinking skills, while AILET includes both comprehension and non-comprehension-based questions. Here's a comparison of these exams.
