International Stuttering Awareness Day 2023 History

Over seven crore individuals worldwide grapple with the challenges of stuttering. The International Stuttering Association (ISA) took a proactive stance on this issue by initiating International Stuttering Awareness Day. In 1995, during a conference in Linköping, Sweden, the ISA crafted a wish list advocating for the establishment of such a day.

The call gained momentum in 1997 at the International Fluency Association (IFA) conference when Michael Sugarman, co-founder of the National Stuttering Project, championed the cause for a global day dedicated to stuttering awareness. In 1998, Sugarman's vision came to fruition as the European League of Stuttering Associations, International Fluency Association, and ISA jointly declared October 22 as Stuttering Awareness Day.

International Stuttering Awareness Day 2023 Significance

This day is dedicated to fostering an understanding that stuttering, a disorder affecting over 70 million people worldwide, should not be a basis for discrimination or mockery. Its essence lies in promoting the self-esteem of individuals who stutter, motivating them to pursue their goals and aspirations. Typically manifesting in children aged 2 to 6, stuttering poses a challenge where, despite knowing what they want to say, individuals find themselves unable to articulate their thoughts smoothly.

  • Gather Information: Visit your local public library and inquire about resource materials on stuttering from the Stuttering Foundation.
  • Read a Book: Numerous excellent books on stuttering are available. The Foundation offers several in E-book format, some of which have been translated into other languages.
  • Practice Patient Listening : When conversing with a person who stutters, refrain from completing their sentences unless invited to do so. Maintain eye contact and be patient—many individuals who stutter appreciate a bit of extra time to express themselves.

International Stuttering Awareness Day 2023 Types of stuttering

  • Premature Stuttering (During Child Development): This occurs when a child is still in the process of acquiring speaking and language skills. It's the most common form, with the exact cause remaining elusive. Many believe it arises from a variation in wiring among the brain regions responsible for speech. In children, whose brain connections are still in development, many naturally outgrow stuttering. Treatment is generally more effective in younger children, taking advantage of their evolving brain connections. Additionally, genetics are thought to contribute, as approximately 66% of stuttering cases run in the same family.
  • Delayed (Acquired) Stuttering: This type is linked to factors such as strokes, head trauma, or other forms of brain injury. It emerges when the brain encounters challenges in coordinating various regions, leading to difficulties in producing clear and fluent speech. Certain medications or traumatic experiences can also trigger this form of stuttering.
