CT Scan Full Form

The CT Scan full form is a computed topography Scan. This scan usually takes cross-sectional images of the internal organs to check the presence of any tumour or fracture within the bones. This test also determines the abnormalities in the blood vessels and is used to check cardiovascular disease. There are several risks associated with the CT Scan namely, cancer, allergic reactions, flashing, itching, etc. In this article, we have provided the complete details related to the CT scan full form.

Procedure of Doing CT Scan

Here are the major steps that one has to adhere to during their CT scan:
  • Pre-test Preparation
Abstain from eating solid food at least four hours before the scan to prevent any complications. This is for those who have to complete their CT scan using specially manufactured dyes. Apart from this, ensure to remove any kind of metallic object from your body like pins, watches, glasses or jewellery etc.
  • During the Scan
During the CT scan, you have to simply lie inside the machine. If you are prone to any allergy from the dyes then you will be given the required medication to combat that. The whole process takes about half an hour or 45 minutes to complete.
  • Aftermath of Scan
After the medical assistant and radiologists take a precise image of your internal organs, you will be removed from the machine. You will be asked to stay in the hospital and will be observed by the healthcare professionals for about 30 minutes.

Advantages of CT Scan

  • CT scans are known to offer highly detailed cross-sectional images of the body. With this one can get precise images of bones, blood vessels, or soft tissues to diagnose a different medical condition
  • Unlike other scan types, CT scans offers a wide range of application in the medical field. The results help to analyse the different parts namely, the pelvis, chest, and abdomen to detect fractures, tumours, vascular diseases, etc
  • As compared to MRI scans, CT scans are comparatively quick in results. This is perfect for better patient care and faster diagnosis
  • CT scans are non-invasive, meaning they do not require any surgical incisions. The process usually is very easy and one has to simply lie on a table and the scanner will move over their body
  • In contrast to other scanners, CT scan machine is widely available in all mid and large hospitals and medical centres. This is great for diagnosing the problem during an emergency situation
  • CT Scan is a completely safe process for patients as the dose of the radiation is slightly less than that of other scan types.

Risks Associated with CT Scan

Here are the possible risks associated with CT Scan:
  • Exposure to high radiation inside the CT scan machine increases the risk of cancer among human beings
  • The dye that is applied to the body during the scan can also cause allergic reactions in the individuals
  • Flushing
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Constipation

Are CT Scans and MRIs Different

CT Scan and MRI both are high radiation scans that are prescribed by doctors depending on your condition.
