The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was established in 1911 as Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) to coordinate and promote medical research. After eight years in 1919, the British Medical Research Council restructured and renamed it the Indian Research Fund (IRF). However, it was renamed as However, it was in 1949 that it was renamed the Indian Council of Medical Research. The major objective of ICMR was to promote biomedical research with a focus on the improvement of public health. ICMR has played a major role in advancing medical research and addressing public health challenges. It has conducted numerous researches over the years to develop health policies and vaccines. With its research, ICMR has successfully eradicated diseases such as smallpox and guinea worm, etc.

1. Development of Vaccines
ICMR has been a pioneer in developing diseases for vaccines. They indulge in in-depth research for the development of high-quality vaccines. ICMR in collaboration with different authorities have helped to develop Covaxin, India’s own vaccine.
2. Eradication of Diseases
ICMR has actively contributed to the eradication of diseases such as smallpox and guinea worm disease in India. The authorities have conducted numerous research, surveillance, and measures to control the same.
3. Disease Surveillance and Control
Over the years, ICMR has prescribed an extensive disease surveillance system in collaboration with various institutes. This surveillance model has helped organisations to draft the disease trend. It also helps in identifying its carrier and implementing control measures.
4. Diagnostic Tools and Guidelines
ICMR has developed diagnostic tools, testing protocols, and treatment guidelines for various diseases. These tools and guidelines have been useful to detect, manage and control diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and viral hepatitis.
5. Research Initiatives

ICMR conducts regular training workshops and programmes that help to elevate the research skills of the workforce. These workshops are held under higher senior supervision to cater to the needs of the staff.
