CNS Full Form in Medical

The CNS full form in Medical is the Central Nervous System. There are two components of CNS namely, brain and spinal cord. The brain functions as a computer that collects all kinds of reactions from the brain. It also controls our thoughts, intelligence, and memory and processes it further. Whereas, the spinal cord controls the motor nerves and offers suitable responses as offered by the brain.

What is the Central Nervous System?

The central Nervous system is a part of the nervous system of the body. It is also one of the two parts of the main nervous system other than the Peripheral Nervous system. The human body is extremely complex and so is its nervous system. The main role of the system is to know about the complex system and respond accordingly. The Central Nervous System is also known as the processing centre of the body. Both the organs of the CNS are protected by a layered membrane called meninges.

Different Parts of CNS

1. The Cerebrum

This is the largest part of the brain and controls activities like motor control, sensory perception, cognition, and emotions.

2. The cerebellum

This is located at the back of the head and is responsible for controlling muscle movement, coordination and balance control.

3. Brain Stem

The brain stem is the main bridge between the cerebellum and cerebrum. The part of the brain connects vital functions such as breathing and heart rate.

4. Hypothalamus

This part of the brain is responsible for regulating hormones and controlling appetite, body temperature and sleep.

Grey and White Matter

The CNS is divided into two parts, Grey Matter and White matter. Grey matter is known to comprise neuron cell bodies. It is found in the outer layers of the brain. The major parts of the nerves are dendrites, glial cells as well as capillaries, and also offer an abundant supply of blood to the body. It is called grey because of the blood supply to the tissue. Grey matter always forms a butterfly shape in the spinal cord. Whereas, white matter is known as that portion of the CNS that hosts the majority of axons. These are extended from neurons and are shaped as long cords. These are covered by a coating of myelin which is a fatty insulating cover that supports nerve signals. White matter is known to be buried under the grey surface.

What is a Brain?

The Brain is the control centre of the body and is the second important part of the CNS. The brain functions by majorly sending electrochemical signals to control and coordinate body functions. It is known to control movement, consciousness, learning, and thinking. Apart from this, it also controls the coordination of sensory systems, motor commands, and communications between various parts of the body.

What is the Spinal Cord?

A spinal cord is a cylindrical bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the back. This organ is responsible for coordinating the reflex action of the body. The spinal cord starts from the medulla and extends downwards. The organ is enclosed inside a bony cage known as a vertebral column and is surrounded called meninges. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves and are grouped regionally by spinal regions. The spinal cord has only three major functions namely coordinating reflexes, transmitting sensory information, and sending motor commands.
