IUCD Full Form

The IUCD full form is an Intrauterine Contraceptive Device. The device is one of the major methods that is used to prevent fertilisation. It is usually T-shaped and is available in two types namely, copper and plastic. It works by damaging the fertilisation process thus preventing the pregnancy process.

However, it does not offer any protection against STIs and thus is not completely reliable to prevent that.

IUCD का मतलब "अंतर्गर्भाशयी गर्भनिरोधक उपकरण" है। यह एक प्रकार का जन्म नियंत्रण है जिसे गर्भावस्था को रोकने के लिए गर्भाशय में डाला जाता है। आईयूसीडी छोटे, टी-आकार के उपकरण होते हैं जो प्लास्टिक या धातु से बने होते हैं और अक्सर प्रोजेस्टिन नामक हार्मोन से लेपित होते हैं। वे निषेचन प्रक्रिया को बाधित करके काम करते हैं और विशिष्ट प्रकार के आईयूसीडी के आधार पर, उन्हें कई वर्षों तक उसी स्थान पर छोड़ा जा सकता है। आईयूसीडी जन्म नियंत्रण का एक सुरक्षित और प्रभावी तरीका है जिसका उपयोग वे महिलाएं कर सकती हैं जो यौन रूप से सक्रिय हैं और गर्भावस्था को रोकना चाहती हैं। इन्हें अक्सर उन महिलाओं के लिए अनुशंसित किया जाता है जो चिकित्सीय स्थितियों या व्यक्तिगत प्राथमिकताओं के कारण जन्म नियंत्रण के अन्य रूपों का उपयोग नहीं कर सकती हैं।

IUCD full form in medical is Intrauterine Contraceptive Device. It is usually a small device that is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy and is known for its reversible effects. The device is usually made of plastic or copper and works by not allowing to sperm thrive in the body. The IUCD can remain in the body for a period of five to twelve years thus making it a convenient form of birth control.

Types of IUCD

Generally, there are two types of IUCDs and both are inserted within the body. The two types of IUCD are copper IUCS and hormonal IUCD. Upon insertion, it lies in the body for a brief time period of time. Know about the two types of IUCD in the section below.

Copper IUCDs

These IUCDs are made of copper and release copper ions into the uterus. The copper ions prevent sperms and also do not allows fertilisation. The usual life of a Copper IUCD is twelve years and is an extremely effective method of birth control.

Hormonal IUCDs

These IUCDs release a hormone called progestin as it thickens the cervical mucus. Additionally, it also thins the lining of the uterus to prevent fertilisation. The total life of the hormonal IUCS is upto five years.

How Does IUCD Work?

The main idea of IUCD is to damage the fertilisation process and also prevent pregnancy. This is a sage and effective method of birth control which is used by women who do not want pregnancy. These are recommended for women who are not willing to use any other form of birth control. The ICUDs are safe to use and do not offer any kind of side effects, unlike other birth control methods. Any of the IUCD used by the women simply prevents fertilisation as the ions released by the device are toxic to sperm and do not allows it to thrive within the ovary.

  • An IUD is a device that is inserted inside the body and hence is reversible as it can be removed whenever the woman wants to get pregnant
  • Copper IUDs do not contain hormones and work by creating an environment in the uterus that is toxic to sperm
  • IUDs do not require any maintenance or regular check-ups, although it is recommended to check the strings regularly to ensure the device is in place
  • IUDs are safe and one of the safest method to use which does not cause any imbalance in the hormones and hence works wonder by preventing pregnancy

Disadvantages of IUCD

The following are the major disadvantages that one has to face by inserting IUCD:
  • IUCDs have to be inserted in the body by a healthcare provider and thus is uncomfortable to remove or insert
  • A lot of people experience major side effects like cramping, bleeding or nausea after inserting the IUCD in the body as it can lead to small infection
  • If the body does not accept IUCD then the uterus will expel it within the first week of insertion and this can be risky
  • IUCD may perforate the uterus or cervix during insertion which can lead to surgery and also cause abnormal uterus problem
  • IUCD can lead to long-term effects on the fertility of women and it can lead to scarring of the uterus
