DDT Full Form

The DDT full form is DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane. Finding a wide application in the farming and Agriculture industry, it is used mainly as a pesticide. The chemical was synthesised in 1874 as an emergency repellant against mosquitoes and bugs. However, since then, it has been categorised as a general pesticide and is used all over the world.

DDT Full Form In English

The DDT full form is DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane. It is an odourless and transparent organochlorine chemical. DDT finds extensive usage as an insecticide in the Agricultural industry. Farmers spray the chemical on the standing crops to protect them from pests and insecticides. However, the chemical composition of DDT makes it unfit for human consumption. Studies have shown that the DDT chemical is poisonous to living organisms it targets and destroys crucial body tissues. The modus operandi of the DDT chemical is very simple. It is usually sprayed over the plants. The nerves of the insects living on crops are damaged by coming in contact with the chemical leading to immediate death.

DDT Full Form in Hindi

The DDT Full Form in Hindi is डाइक्लोरोडिफेनिलट्राइक्लोरोइथेन है।

DDT Full Form in Medical

The DDT full form is DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane. It is a chemical pesticide that is sprayed over crops suffering from insect attacks. It is usually a colourless or odourless liquid that damages the nervous system of insects causing permanent death.

History of DDT

The usage of DDT dates back to the year 1874 during World War II. Back in the year, it was synthesised in a lab in the USA. The primary reason for its manufacturing was to curb typhus and growing cases of malaria. At that time, it was used as a spray. However, in the early 1970s, the US government discovered its negative implications and the health problems it posed for the common people. Hence, in the year 1973, The Agency for Environmental Protection banned the use of DDT in the U. S. Although, the chemical is banned in America some other nations have been found to be using it to date.

Chemical Structure and Composition of DDT

Here is all you can learn about the chemical structure and composition of DDT:
  • The molecular formula of DDT full form is C14H9Cl5. The chemical is hydrophobic and does not dissolve easily in water. However, it works best with other organic solvents like oil and fat
  • The DDT is formed naturally after an organic reaction between chloral (CCl3CHO) and chlorobenzene (C6H5Cl) in the presence of a sulphuric acid catalyst (H2SO4)

DDT Full Form Uses

DDT finds wide use in the agriculture and fertilizer industry. Available in a spray form, the chemical is used over a large piece of land where physical scrutiny for pests is impossible. DDT chemical is spread over the area to block the pests and insects harming the crops instantly.

Cons of DDT

The DDT full form suggests that it is a very harmful chemical for living organisms that thus has to be used in moderation. Here are the major cons associated with DDT.
  • The chemical component of DDT is harmful for living beings and the environment
  • The bugs and insects dying after coming in contact with the DDT chemical die on the same soil. Due to this, the chemical easily enters the crops and plants
  • DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane is sprayed on plants to save them from insect and pest damage. However, edible vegetables and plants enter the human body once we consume them which is a threat. In the same way, the chemical also finds a way into the animal body compromising their immune system as well. These plants when eaten by birds result in the thinning of eggshells which eventually destroys the embryo

Adverse Effects of DDT

DDT is a highly toxic and harmful chemical for a wide range of species, including mammals, birds, and fish. Here are some of the possible side effects of DDT on the human body, aquatic life, and birds as well.
  • Breast cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Tumour
